1980 249 dl. headlights and tail lights do not work. If I pull on high beam stalk high beams come on. hazards work. fuses good. seems like main switch to me, any thoughts?

It is common for the switch to fail because there is no relay for the low beams. Check the connector on the switch for overheating also. If you have a multimeter check the operation of the switch.

Did an inspection of switch and it was indeed an overheated terminal. had to splice in a new lead and terminal connector and all good.

The internal switch contacts do burn up in time. Consider installing a generic 12V relay to unload the high current duty from the switch. Mount on left fender next to high beam relay.
