Shock rattle 200 1990

Hey Guys, I replaced my Bilstein HD's with Boge Turbo shocks in the rear. I have a terrible rattle. However tonight I had five people in the car and the rattle went away. When they got out, it was back. What does that suggest?

With the Bilstein Touring rear shocks, it is, apparently, the upper shock mount. The inside diameter of the hollow metal bit is slightly larger than the OD of the top mount stud. While you can torque it to 60 ft-lbs, it may still rattle.

There may be movement in the lower rear shock anchor hardware stack.

    Maybe apply more torque?

Maybe suspend and support the rear trailing arm to slacken all rear shock stress. Then loosen, realign, and torque rear shock secure hardware stacks to spec?

    If not, I'd contact Bilstein.

Amazing how these quality problems persist for after-market 240 parts for perhaps a decade and longer and no one contacts the manufacturer.

Unless the so-called purchased in North America Boge says "Made in Germany", or somewheres Europa, stamped into the steel of the Boge strut cartridge or shock, you have crappy Made in Mexico Sachs. Made in Mexico Sachs brand Advantage is not Made in Germany Boge Turbo Gas.

If you can source Made in Germany Boge in North America, please share on this board.

Made in Mexico Sachs is barely better than KYB.

    cheers,

    Dud.

I have noticed the same thing and determined (at least on mine) that the nut/bolt on the lower shock mount just will NOT stay tight enough to hold it in place and the eye of the shock rattles on the mount. KYB shocks. They have only lasted a year and need to be replaced, I am thinking that maybe this could also have something to do with inferior bushings (that cam with the shocks).

It can be in the shocks... I had a seemingly incurable rattle in my 240 after installing Bilstein Touring shocks a few years ago. Exchanged them to no effect and finally got a pair of ... Boge Turbos, which solved the noise.

Just this week changed a pair of Bilstein Tourings on a 93 945, same persistent rattle. A new pair of Sachs in this case fixed the noise. Nothing visibly or functionally wrong with the Bilsteins. Except they drive you crazy.

the shocks are held in place by a long bolt through the trailer arm and stud bolted to the frame.

the upper stud which bolts to the frame is held in place by a nut on the inner side of the frame. sometimes this nut can work loose causing the stud to wobble which in turn causes the shock to be unstable at its upper mounting point.
