Fuse 12 Blues: Keeps blowing out 200 1993

The 240 fuse #12 keeps frying. I have isolated it to the A/C compressor being turned on.

As soon as the A/C compressor snowflake switch is turned on you can see the fuse heat up and pop. I suppose it could be a ground/bad wire issue or clutch issue.

Could I get some help with the diagnosis so I can repair it. I replaced the compressor about 2 years ago, but I guess the clutch could be going bad.

Thanks as always.

###UPDATE## STILL NOT FIXED but we are getting there... 200 1993

I think the wire was too close to the back of the pulley on the compressor causing the short. I took a screwdriver and pushed it back away from the pulley and then zip tied it back away from the pulley. I cranked it, flipped the a/c switch but the clutch didn't engage.

I put a jumper wire up on the dryer to force the clutch to engage. I did so after I checked the pressure. It had a pressure of about 45 (ambient temp outside here at home is about 50 degrees). The clutch engaged with the jumper wire. It ran fine and did not blow the fuse out.

I took the jumper wire off and re-hooked the plug back on the pressure switch on the dryer. I could not get the compressor to work. I pulled the plug off and jumper wired it: compressor works.

Well, do I now look to the a/c relay or the pressure switch on the dryer or something else?

Glad to hear fuse #12 is still intact.

Yes, it does sound as though the pressostat switch has failed. The failure of the AC relay would not let the compressor engage by jumpering the pressostat.

        I will pursue that, but 200 1993

Can the pressostat be changed out without releasing all the freon, or will I have to recharge the system?

Is there any way to "bench" test the pressostat before replacing it? With a Voltmeter or something?

Try a search with 240 pressostat on the index page. This is what I got:

          http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1197690/220/240/260/280/ac_low_pressure_switch_part_number_93_r134a.html

There were conflicting storys about depressurizing the system depending on the year and model. Remember, 1993 was the first year of R134a

It is not a bad ground. It could be the wire has worn through in one spot where it contacts ground, up by the compressor. That has happened to me on much older models. Or it could be the clutch needs to be replaced.

Simple diagnosis between those two: disconnect the clutch near the compressor. Check the wire and its routing for any spot it may have rubbed through. This is a good time of year to make that test unless you are having trouble defogging the windshield. Even so, with fuse 12 intact, you can roll down the windows.

Will do Art. I will report back my findings.

Thanks for the assistance and Merry Xmas!
