Front Brake Dust Shields 700

I''m considering replacing rusted dust shields. How does one remove the hubs that are in front of shields?

Thanks.

Pry out the hub cap and undo axle nut with 36mm socket. Hub and rotor assembly slides right off. Careful with the bearings so they don't come apart. Re-torque the axle nuts to 74 lb-ft (100 Nm) + 45 degrees.

      Thanks, John.

The cap comes off with anything in particular? The service manual mentions a special tool.

It it easy/advisable to add grease to the bearings while doing this?

The bearings are lubricated for life and should not need cleaning and re-lubing. If they feel rough or are noisy, you could take them apart, inspect them and re-grease them, but when you can get new hubs from fcp for $44 (they were $30 a couple of months ago) it's better to replace them. I replaced mine when I could not remove rusted-on rotors.

I just use a sharp screwdriver and hammer. Once you get a gap, use a heavier screwdriver and keep going round and round. (The original caps actually have the lug nut torque stamped inside. That's not the spindle nut torque.)
