Very creative guy.
I sent it to all my friends that think I'm nuts to continue to drive my '89 as I see them buy new cars every few years.
I gave them the listing and told them that this is their chance to buy a "Chick Magnet" like mine.

Looks like the car is short one engine from the lift in the front.

It kind of fits the psyche of folks who drive 30 year old cars as daily drivers and continue to shop for them. I am one of those, and most folks think of us as a bit odd, I'm sure. I plan on having a 240/740/940 for a daily for the forseeable future.

Nice car 200

I had to read it because that smurf blue 83 was our first Volvo. Sent it to all my Volvo "customers" too and got some appreciative replies, including one reference to a Dodge Durango and someone called Ron Burgundy (which required a visit to the search engine). Thanks, Matt.

Nice car 200

Apparently a cold afternoon in Ypsilanti. A little humor goes a long way, but I think I'll send him a small bill for my time to read the ad... what the heck; at least he's got a sense of humor, which is a good thing with a 30 year old Volvo.

It was a fun read and nicely written, thanks for sharing :)

I'm rather surprised folks see it in a way other than myself. Which is not to say I'm disappointed. To each, his own. I'm totally cool with that.

For me, it's simply a car ad made by someone that wanted to do something creative and entertaining in a category of otherwise mundane car ads on CL.

And to make a joke at absolutely nobody's expense at all. Not his, not the car's, not the model, not the readers. (unless you're offended at reading it in the first place. I, for one, like his style and see it as a well written piece. I've slogged through some really bad writing; this made me smile..)

But I understand if you don't care for the humor. and I understand that there are errors. I, for one, was not the least offended that the seller overlooked the 1975 model year :)

Cheers!

To me, Matt, it was a nice try.....but certainly waaaaay too long. Sometimes the soul of humor is brevity. Unfortunately for that writer, after the first few paragraphs, I totally lost interest in both the message and the style. Sort of reminded me of Dave Barry who had the annoying habit of gassing on and on about topics of otherwise little interest.

But that's just my opinion.

Ditto. Parts of it were fun to read, but there was plenty of dross to wade through. Dave Barry may also be wordy, but he's also pretty consistently funny. As for the writer somewhat implying that Edvard Grieg was Swedish, at least he didn't mention ABBA in his suggestion to listen to Scandanavian music!

He mentioned he's in grad school - perhaps in English Lit?

Perhaps I was a bit harsh.

I will plead displaced anxiety.

If I had the power... 200

...to make shit rain down out of the sky on someone, this person would be at the top of the list.

And Edvard Grieg is Norwegian.

If the seller spent as much time caring for the car as composing the ad, it might be worth a look. As it is, and looking through all the poetic silliness, it's not, to me at least, an $800 Volvo. Meh!

Very true... I wouldn't pay $800. It's a parts car at best.

An honest ad would have read something like:

'83 Volvo. High miles, rusty, needs lots of work. Runs.'

Boring :)

Yes, there are parts that are very funny -- and I may have doomed my family by not reading it in its entirety. -- Dave
