odometer problem....not gears 200 1983

My odometer cable keeps backing out of the odometer slot or hole. Push it back in and it works. The black piece on the back of the cluster to hold it in does not do its job. Also my Speedo bounces at high speeds. I don't know if they are related.
I'm 1400 miles shy of 250,0000.
Any ideas for a fix or repair. Do I need a new cable?

Thanks

You probably need a new cable unless you can figure a way to wedge or tie wrap it so it can't move out of the speedo.

Exactly my thoughts but with the added suspicion this problem didn't happen by itself -- it is more likely caused by whomever had the cluster out some time ago. Getting the cable threaded through the wires back there takes some thought to have it so the bias in the bend keeps it in the socket. The broken anti-tamper plastic locknut isn't likely to make up for that.

Having the whole cable replaced may even have been the cause, since this requires a lot of exacting work with clamps, etc., all "geared" to making the length perfect from movable transmission tailshaft housing to the speedometer in the cluster.
