In the last 60s, I was stationed at SHAPE in Belgium - we had access to a 6 or 8 bay garage run by Special Services.

I helped a friend change the thermostat on his MG,

Right after I told him not to tighten he bolts too tight, he cracked the thermostat housing!

They had a fenced-in lot to leave the car in until we got the part the next day.

It was a great benefit to have this facility available.

I'd never heard of such a thing until I saw the movie of Stephen King's Christine. Since then I've heard mention of such places in the PNW. Insurance and liability waivers must be a hoot.

Two vultures board an airplane, each carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at them and says: "I'm sorry, gentlemen, only one carrion allowed per passenger."

My dad's friend owned a " You Fix It" On Montauk Highway in Patchogue ,NY Long Island.

He did very well until the damned Insurance companies finally beat him into giving it up. Insurance companies really do dicatate how and what companies do. They also have a huge hand in reasons why good ideas never make it past the idea stage.

This looks like the same thing. Air tools and lifts and a few very handy guys to offer advice as you stumble.

Before your time--not long after my wife and I moved to Bay Shore in 1973--there was such a facility locally. It's a distant memory now - was off Rt. 110 in Farmingdale. For the D-I-Y'er it was great -- but I guess not so much for the owners. They only lasted a couple of years. -- Dave
