Cool. 1983 with a carb. Is that a B23A or ? under the 242 bonnet?
I'll bet you have the factory installed K-cam in that engine.
You've tried the stealership (dealership), or perhaps Tasca Volvo in Cranston, RI? I imagine FCP Groton in CT-state and iPd in Portland, OR may not be much help.
You could use a downpipe, yet have the section between the header pipe out put to the front resonator input (if you choose to go two resonator [resonator in front, muffler in back] custom made to fit at your honest and reliable exhaust shop. They may make it custom or may use a pre-fab part, cut off an end, and match it to the head pipe out and the front resonator input.
If you want some rumble, you could also go "turbo exhaust" and only use a rear muffler resonator setup, though it needs to be a little extra beefy, and the long exhaust run resonates into the car body to make for a lumpy idle, a wee bit.
Also, be certain the end of the header pipe secures to the rear header pipe exhaust bracket hardware. The primary bracket hands off two bell housing to engine block bolts, and an intermediate plate secures between the bracket and the header pipe. Always use all hanger methods to secure the exhaust.
Be certain the exhaust shop uses good quality parts like Volvo OEM, or maybe made in Sweden Starla, and the other brand that is of good quality.
When crafting an exhaust system, the exhsuat system should be aligned so all hangs correctly and easily on the hangers.
That'd be so cool. A carb on a 242. 242s, IMHO, is the best 240 body style, but I loves em all.
Hope that helps.
