bad rust at frame -> control arm - body questions 200 1993

Just discovered some bad rust where the bottom bolt of the control arm mount/trailing arm bracket connects to the frame, front driver's side - the piece of the frame there is really rusted, separating and halfway gone. At this point, the bracket is really only supported by the upper 2 of the three bolts. Frame-wise, nothing else looks rusty at all, but this part looks terrible... and definitely unsafe.

Also wondering what exact part that is - hard to tell in the diagram below if that's #4 (jack pad/jack support member) or #5 (rear extn front section/side member tie plate)? Or both?

Any idea of how much in labor this would cost to fix at a typical body shop? Besides the carpet, does anything else have to be removed from the interior to weld this? I plan on offering to take out the seat, carpet etc and order the parts myself from Tasca if that will save me $$$.

rust is like finding a cockroach on your counter top at the 3am when you open the fridge for a snack.

if you see one you can be sure there are many more out of sight.

and frame rot is a whole'nother level of trouble.

i'd be looking to replace the car

Yikes! Yeah, that's pretty bad--far worse than any floor pan/chassis rust I've repaired. I think I'd agree with trichard-especially if there's any sign of similiar spots in the chassis--but it is repairable at that spot. To fix it I'd be looking for a donor car to supply the entire section---or to transfer your good drivetrain/suspension to. If you go ahead with repair try to remove as many interior panels as you can--especially the seats -- they WILL retain the burnt smell. Be prepared to spend $. -- Dave

Checked it out in the daylight today, the rest of the frame looks pretty good. I can't see any other areas that have anything more than light surface rust, if that. The only other bad rust on the body is in the bottom corners of the doors, which I can live with.

It looks like the disintegrated piece is the inboard-middle part of the jack point member - it's perfectly fine at the outside where the actual jack point is, and looks pretty okay right where it actually connects to the floor/other frame parts. my guess is that a previous owner (or some crappy shop) jacked it up there instead of on the outside where you're supposed to, and crushed or cracked it ... and then rust ate the newly exposed/cracked metal right up.

The rest of the car is pretty great and I just finished putting a new heater core in, so I really do not want to junk it - I'm going to get a couple of estimates this week and see if it will be worthwhile to fix.

        Thanks!

Just an update: found a shop that took the job on, it wasn't cheap but not as bad as it could have been, either. I got the car for a steal, so it worked for me. They used parts from a rust-free donor body and did a pretty amazing job.
