Mann oil filters

About a month ago my son reported that the Mann oil filter on his 1995 944T had backed off enough to cause a major oil leak. He added oil and tightened the filter. This week I had a major oil leak on my 1994 944T. I, too found the oil filter leaking from the gasket integral to the filter. I've been doing my own oil changes for over forty years, and I've always tightened spin on oil filters with one hand as tight as I could turn it. I've never had an oil leak until now. I suspect that Mann is using a different rubber in the oil filter gasket, and that it is getting soft and allowing an oil leak and possibly allowing the filter to loosen.

Some cranky German workers??

Very interesting news! Especially the TB thread..

Maybe there has been a bad batch or bad year? I was just looking under my car at the mechanics and I saw similar drips, although I didn't think much of it or look closer, as I thought it was one of my known leaks... I will have to look again!

John, I've had the same experience. So have others, according to a TB thread (scroll to post 57) on the subject. My filter inventory still claims "Made in Germany."

I thought I was just getting weak with age.

We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

My last 2 ten packs were made in Germany.

I tighten mine at least 3/4 turn past contact with the engine and use a wrench to do it, I have never had one come loose.

I know it's recommended that oil filters only be hand tightened, but how reliable can that be? Depending on how greasy your hands are, how accessible the filter is, how strong your grip is, whether the filter is smooth or textures, hand tightening is a crap shoot. I always give mine another 1/4 to 1/2 turn with a tool after hand tightening. I've done that ever since I had an oil change done by a garage over 40 years ago and the filter loosened, spewing my oil on the highway.

Yes, if one reads that TB thread, you'll see what sort of abuse people might get for admitting one of theirs leaked. :)

Not many things more sacred in the Volvo Maintenance Clique than Mann Filters.

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

These are the W917 filters? Any information on country of manufacture? When did you buy them?

The filters were made in Germany. I think this ten pack came from FCP Groton. I've been to the http://www.mannfiltersrus.com/ site and left a message with links to this thread and the turbobricks thread. As I type this, they have not had time to respond, but if they do I'll include the response in this thread.

I get mine from FCP also, the pictorial instructions on the filter call for 3/4 turn.

The Mann W917 on my shelf is made in Germany. I prefer the Mahle filter, made in Austria, with the fluted top, enabling use of a filter wrench to tighten more than hand tight, usually 1/2 to 2/3 turn after filter contacts housing. Always I put a lick of fresh oil on the filter's rubber gasket, but after 40 years of filter changes you know that, too.
