Water pump weep hole leakage after 10k? 200 1990

This post is regarding my 940, but posting here due to increased traffic.
About 10k miles ago I did a whole bunch of work including water pump,TB, rad hoses and heater hoses, heater valve, intake manofold gasket, oil sump etc...

I used a volvo brand water pump that I purchased from tascaparts.com

Doing some inspection yesterday I noticed a bit of blue discoloration around the weep hole in the water pump. There is no leakage from the donut seal and the paper seal is perfect too. There is not a lot of seepage but if you look closely enough its evident that there has been some blue coolant activity in / around the weep hole.

Is this a normal observation? Don't run my belts super tight...just tight enough to prevent squealing. Any thoughts? Should I switch to a lower pressure coolant reservoir cap?? I'm still using the original OE cap. This is the only thing I can think of.

Thanks,
Matt

Water pump weep hole leakage after 10k? 200 1990

I bought a Genuine Volvo Mater cylinder for one of my daughters cars from TASCA about a year ago. I was disappointed that it was not ATE when I got it, it was not branded at all. I just changed the oil in that car a few weeks ago and noticed the fluid reservoir was way down on fluid. It turned out to have a crack in the reservoir and was replaced by an older one I had saved from an ATE MC.

Again it appears Genuine Volvo parts don't mean much any more we are getting junk anywhere we buy parts today.

Quick pressure test will tell you if the weep hole is seeping. Local autoparts have the loaner tools.

Water pump weep hole leakage after 10k? 200 1988

I do not know too much about 940. For my 88 240, I had a similar problem. What I did was to loosen the belts a little (without squealing) for water pump.

Initially, I thought I might need a new pump so I did not pay too much attention on the leaking. However, the leaking stopped gradually within a couple weeks.

My current genuine Volvo water pump is still running good (just passed 110 K miles).

Cap should be BLACK only on a 240. Lower pressure rating. I would think weeping/leaking is a sign of failure in the future. Have always used OEM pump with great success.

Cut open a water pump 200 1990

"I would think weeping/leaking is a sign of failure in the future."

I cut open a water pump to see how they're built. Fluid from the weep hole doesn't appear to indicate imminent failure. Rather that the seal between the outer case and the inner steel casing is bad.

It's the inner steel casing which carries the guts of the water pump (shaft and bearings) and is press fit into the soft metal outer casing of the water pump. Basically the press fit is leaking, rather than the water pump.
