re: 87 245 auto - more oil leak 200 1987

Hi all,

I must have filled up a little too much when I changed my oil. The oil level is right at Max. After driving about 500 miles, the green box area started to leak again just like when my oil separator was clogged. I am going to drain oil to mid-level. Do I have leaky head gasket? Time for compression test? Thank you.

    ANSWER re: 87 245 auto - more oil leak 200 1987

You've probably got a leaky front cam seal. Make sure the whole PCV system is clean and replace the seal. BTW, you can blow out a brand new seal if you still have a clogged flame trap or oil seperater.

This post has been marked as an answer to the original question.

      Hi Sean,

It sounds like you nailed it. Thank you.

I drained oil level to 80% mark last night, I almost fell into a puddle of garbage water as I was getting up. You gotta love Brooklyn.

I will keep my eye on the cam seal. I just changed that seal not too long ago...

      as scorron said 200 1987

you most definitely have a leaking front cam seal. this is exactly where the leak shows up.

when you change it i suggest you buy a very small length of 1 7/8" OD diameter white pvc plumbing pipe. cut a piece 3 or so inches long and after hand setting the seal use this pipe to set the seal the rest of the way in.

if you set the seal all the way in until it rests against the inner stop of the head your leak will be gone.

when you pull out the old seal you can see how far in you need to go.

you need NOT remove the entire t belt to do this job.

set engine to TDC turning balancer

      1. remove fan shroud
      2. remove fan
3 remove 3 bolts and 1 screw from upper cover
      4. pull out alt pulley wheel off 4 water pump studs
      5. remove cover
      6. loosen tensioner bolt
      7. pull belt towards passenger fender and insert allen wrench into tensioner hole to take pressure off belt
      8. carefully remove belt off cam sprocket
      9. use a small vise grip to grip t belt together just above intermediate shaft so it does not move
      10. remove tensioner
      11. impact gun off the cam sprocket nut and remove sprocket BUT reset cam to tdc before removing if it moves
      12. pull outward inner cover
13 remove seal and clean surface

      reverse steps
      12.

        new cam seal 200 1987

        Hi Trichard,

I was able to put a new seal in no time, I think it took a little more than half hour. Felt like a rock star. Thank you so much!!!

        Hi all,

I must have a good seal, it went in with some resistance, I didn't have to use any sealant. Thank you as always.
