Intermediate shaft seal went on too far...? 900 1995

1995 B230FD 270k.

Was suffering from seal problems at the cam and intermediate shaft. I had a new head, belt, and OEM pump on hand, so I'm doing it all at the same time.

When I got the covers off, I found that the intermediate seal had actually popped out - probably the source of the major oil loss.

I put on the new seal and while pressing it, the dang thing went in too far. It's even and it's fully seated, but I don't think it's supposed to be this far down... Concerned that it's going to leak again quickly if this is improper.

Am I worrying about nothing? Can the intermediate seal be in too far? I don;t see an oil drain-back hole, there are no problems with curling, and I can't slip it back out with a thin pick.

Do I leave it as-is, or do I pull the cover and risk damaging my pan gasket?

If the lip of the seal isn't rubbing on anything I would leave it.

I checked all the way round, it doesn't seem to be sitting funny, or rubbing. I ended up putting the whole engine back together and running it as is. I'll keep an eye on it, in case there are further problems, but for the meantime, it seems to be working very well with no problems.

It shouldn't be a problem.. many of us do seat the Seal in or out a bit different then the last seal so the new seal rides on a new section of shaft. Not that the shaft wears that much from the seal but a fresh spot is probably a bit thicker.

The only concern would be if you tapped it way in outer part of the seal is in Jeopardy of falling in the Housing

I have my seals sitting almost flush with the front of the housing and so far no leaks. I suspect any position will work as long as they are properly aligned on the shafts and the seals are fully contacting the housing.
