Uncle Silvermine,
So you have a 1992 240 sedan.
One of the middle, or center lens is melting? That would have to be the top center bulb, and that bulb should be a small, single filament 5W, and I forget the size.
If you mean the lower, outer red lens, on either the left or right side, if you look in your owner manual, you'll see, that for Volvo 240 sedans with the dual filament parking/position/running light AND the brake light filament, you use the white bulb holder for the lower right (US market passenger side) brake light and the black bulb holder for the right side. These dual filament bulb holders are unique in that they have two contact blades for B+ contacts at the bottom of the bulb.
Notwithstanding, you do have a set of those Valero factory or other modern six panel tail lights that accept a dual filament parking light / brake light lamp.
Some folks will pull a six panel tail light from a 1983 sedan or coupe, yet the circuit board was set up for a single filament brake lamp. In order to use these older six panel 200 series tail lights, you:
- change the wiring interface on the connector that attaches to the tail lamp circuit board for a single filament brake light
OR
- modify the tail light housing to accept a later type dual filament brake light on the lower outer red lens positions.
If you go with dual filament, ensure only the parking/running/position lamps are on when lighting is on, and not the brake light, and vice versa.
Hope that hepkats.
