temperature guage 200 1989

After installing a bypass for the temp comp board the gauge goes to the top after ignition though engine is cold. Before bypassing, the gauge didn't move at all.
What could it be? Thank you for your interest.

3 things constitute the temp info

    the gauge
    the wire
    the water temp sender

if the gauge goes to the top it works
if you were to ground the wire after disconnecting it from the snder on the head the gauge should go to the top

    ergo

    the gauge works
    the wire is not broken
leaving only a the bad sender in the head

THIS PRESUMES YOU SOLDERED A JUMPER BETWEEN POSTS 1 AND 3 ON THE CLUSTER AND DID NOT SHORT SOMETHING OUT DOING THIS JOB
