Fuel pump relays

I have A 1986 240 fuel pump relay and can I replace it with a fuel pump relay from a 1991 240? They told me it's the same relay for all the years. Is that correct? I don' t want to get all the way there to replace it and have the wrong part with me. Also, question number 2..... I was told that when a fuel pump relay gets hot and starts not to work( what happened to me... Car didn't turn over when car was running for a while would not crank over). That when a fuel pump relay overheats or doesn't t work correctly it will also affect the air control valve and make the car race... Which was happening as well. Was told that that fuel pump relay will also affect that! Never heard of that! I will know when I change the relay if it takes care of the no start and faster idle problem..... Very interesting! WhatS your thoughts on both questions, thanks, lynn

The relay has nothing to do with the engine cranking over, but it will not start and run with a bad one.

That is not correct. They vary from year to year so go to a reputable site like FCP Groton or IPD then find the part number for both years. If the number is the same, they are interchangeable.

I seem to remember the 84/85 had the generic ice-cube relays and the 86-93 DID use the same but that is just going from memory.

Alternatively, pull one on the '86 and compare the diagram on the top...if they are the same, you are good.
