Hi all,

FYI. There is no sign of any build up as some of you mentioned.

Distance; around 75,000 miles over two and half years.
Oil type; Use Mobil 1 oil every 5000 miles.
Oil filter; Mann filter every 5000 miles.

During summer; warm up around 1 minute on cold start
During winter; warm up around 3 minutes on cold start

Driving style; Brooklyn, NY. Drive gently most of the time + no jack rabbit start. Open throttle on highway once in a while.

Odometer read 136K when I bought it, actually mileage unknown.
Currently 210K not including odometer malfunction.

update III 200 1987

Hi All,

I put about 38,000 miles since the last report, the outer holes were clogged completely. The mid section area doesn't look great either.

Sorry guys, no photos. During my lunch break, I noticed there was an oil puddle. I thought that I had an oil leak so I opened my flame trap. I cleaned it like a mad man. It turns out the puddle belongs to someone else. The parking lot is designated so I assume that it was mine. :)

FYI. Around 255,000 miles on the odometer. Sorry about the B&W photos. I had some trouble with my flash light.

Fairly clean and no clogging.

The back side/underside is clean too.

There were some build up around the wall. They formed like crystallization.

I hope I'm not making this up. I believe I read a posting on this website about flame traps, and deleting them. If I remember correctly, Volvo even sanctioned it. The topic was controversial and not all posters were willing to delete. I have deleted it on my wife's 90 240.

On the newer models, the factory OK'ed the removal of the screen. At least the 850's and S/V70s. Not sure about the 4 bangers, but with fuel injection, when was the last time you heard a serious back fire in the intake manifold?

I think without the "screen" the oil rich vapour would coke up along the ENTIRE hoses of PCV system like you'd see in the above video. I haven't seen our redblocks needed much cleaning like this.

The turbo engines don't have a flame trap. And for the NA engines, I would think that the hoses would accumulate less 'sludge' with better air flow (without the screen). I would rather have sludged up vacuum lines with some air flow Vs a plugged screen and blown engine seals.

I'm with Klaus on this.

Removed the flame trap from 95 850 after I bought it about 5 1/2 years ago. No problems.

Also removed it from 90 240 and ran it that way for years. No issue there either. No rms or other seal leaks...

the Flame Traps on B21s are positioned between the Valve Cover and the Intake manifold. A direct connection - more or less to a Backfire between the Intake and the oil rich cam.. which was the point of the device.

In the B230s, the Flame Trap is between the Intake and the Oil Breather Box - which drops down into the oil sump. Way Way Way less direct flash path

Was this a case of: It's part of the system...how can we work the hosing so it's still there.

Similar to:

yeh, running that rear wiring harness in those Wagons Thru the Hinges causes undue stress on that harness and causes it to break...and what a pain in the keester to remove those hinges and run a new harness...knowing full well that the same stress that broke the original harness will break the one I just installed.

Can't we Re-Design the Path ....I mean this Model has been going for like 10 Years...and we've been sitting on our as$$es.

No I got a better Idea. Let's weaken the Main Bearings...maybe we can get better gas mileage from the weight reduction. (OR maybe the cars will DIE sooner and they'll have to buy a new one. AKA the Curse of the Indestructable Automobile. ****)

But as the Late John Belushi would say

Hi all,

I spoke too soon. I have had high crank pressure. I will give you guys more update on my flametrap as I put more miles on it. I did a blow test trick after replacing my main seal, it was fine then. Now, I can't see how it got clogged up so bad within 7500 miles...

ditto with AmsOil (apparently any synthetic) ... 200 1987

Absolutely clean flame trap, and good vacuum (plastic wrap over oil filter, can't use "rattling" cap on B230s), with AmsOil, too. Seems to be the result of any synthetic.

That's my experience too over six 700/900 cars: using synthetic avoids any deposits.

That's the cleanest flame trap I've ever seen. Any chance the hoses are plugged? But if it passes the oil cap rattle test and the system is that clean, kudos to synthetic.

Two previous owners did their oil changes religiously but nothing else.... Yes, it did passed my breathing test.

The build up you mention occurs with the use of so called dino oil but not synthetic.

Delo 200 1989

My flame trap has stayed clean ever since I switched from Castrol (dino oil) about 6 years ago, to Delo(also dino), Mann filter; oil & filter changed religiously every 3k miles; regular tune-ups also helps. Also use (only) "Torco" SEP oil additive per change. The fact the engine is also in over all excellent condition at over 300k factors in.
