Radio amplifier question 900 1991

1991 740 and 940 wagons have 6 speakers, 2 in dash, 2 in front doors and 2 in rear doors.

Aftermarket radio/CD/MP3 players will only power 4 speakers. All the amps I find are huge compared to the stock Volvo.

-Anyone know of an amp that will fit under the drivers side dash like the Volvo original?
-If no small amp. where do you mount yours? The storage compartment in the rear isn't an option. Used for tool and bike junk storage.

cheers

Buy a radio (I used Sonic Electronix) and a special connector off of eBay. You need the alpine type DIN connector with RCA outs. You can then power the 2 speakers from the new deck and use the existing amp to power the other 4 speakers using the new magic cable you bought from eBay. Note there is a female and a male version, you need to see which you need. This info is out there in Google land, but it took some searching to find it a year or so back. Good luck.

First, read this thread...friggin awesome even if I do not agree with everything:

Second, the build in amplification is plenty to run all 6 speakers if that is your desire and plenty more than stock stereo and amp together provided.

If you still want an Amp, mount it in the driver side spare tire cubby where the electric antenna mechanism is. In my case I replaced the cover with a home built subwoofer enclosure and mounted the amp to the bottom. Half the folks that own these cars do not even realize you have those cubbies on either side of the third seat/storage compartment. This location also has a built in turn-on lead with the electric ant lead.

There are companies that make amps small enough to fit up in the old location but it is not really any easier. Put a "bass blocker" on the leads to the dash speakers if you are keeping the stock ones.

I STRONGLY reccomend Crutchfield for you radio purchase (no affiliation, etc). They tend to be about 10% more expensive that buying the components and installation items yourself but:

customer service is amazing
wiring harness supplied are the right ones
Installation kit is the right one and extremely well built (never tried the Scosche or Metra kits for a 940)
customer service is amazing

When I installed my new radio I had some cahllenges because of the moron that installed the last one. As a result, I used the guide I sent you earlier and found that one of the front speakers was out of phase. Fixed that, tested the until, buttoned everything up...and guess what...the microphone for the bluetooth did not work. Only thing I did not test.

Contacted Crutchfield, did a couple of tests, even plugged in a different (spare, on hand for a computer voip system) mic they said should work. No go. Crutchfield overnighted a replacement to me at their cost and told me to install it and verify everything work for a week before sending the broken one back with the supplied RMA shipping label. GREAT customer service.
