What's this part for? Front Brakes 900 1995

Replacing the front brakes on my 1995 945. Girling Calipers, ABS,

(1) The rebuilt calipers I bought from eeuro contained some extra metal shims (picture below). What are they for? Are they optional?

(2) the inner dust shield on the front driver's side is totally gone (rusted away). Is it dangerous to throw up my hands and no replace it? Will the caliper fail prematurely?

Nathan

Those clip on to the caliper bracket and have to be installed before you install the brake pads.

Having a dust shield is not mandatory, but is recommended. I have seen some cars that don't have a dust shield at all right from the factory, but they were made in the 50's and 60's.

Perfect, thanks for the reply. For the record, the pads will install without those brackets installed at either end, but I can see how the metal shims will let the in/out travel be much smother.

Again, thanks!
