Reporting! That will probably help someone.
So I bought and received the "Estonian" taillight assemblies from eBay, for $100 plus shipping for the pair.
They are made for 86+ and I installed them in my 84.
The main difference is that in 86 and above, there are fog lights, so the rear brake lights are relocated from the top inner position to the bottom outer position, in the same place as one of the running lamps. It just gets brighter when you push on the brakes.
I preferred the original layout with the brake light as a separate lamp (I believe the newer cars have a 3rd brake light as well), so I swapped the circuit boards from my old assemblies to the new ones, since they were working fine, although looking a bit old and corroded, especially one of them.
On the right side, where I had the original Volvo/Cibié assembly, I also swapped the outer bottom bulb assembly because the one from Alvo (the Estonian brand) didn't make a good contact with the old circuit board. It probably would have worked alright though, but I swapped them.
On the left side, where I had a Valéo replacement already, I couldn't swap them as the tabs were a bit different, so I kept the new one in. It worked better on that side for some reason.
In the end, it all works fine, and the new assemblies look nice and clean. There's no telling how long the lenses will stay nice in this Arizona sun. Hopefully for a good while.
That also allowed me to notice that my left side brake bulb was out, despite the fact that I didn't not get a bulb warning on the dash.
Also, my reverse lights don't appear to be working (no difference between new and old assemblies, and old and new circuit boards...
