Horn Repair Kit - 1991 240 200 1991

Is there a reliable horn repair kit for a 91 240? My horn does not work when I push the horn pad, but I can make it blow by attaching a wire to the horn itself.
This shows that the problem is not the horn itself. Since the fuse is OK, I suspect something inside the horn pad or steering wheel. How have other solved this?

    ANSWER Horn Repair Kit - 1991 240 200 1991

Hello, Your horn should have 12 volts at the wire to it,if no voltage then its in the horn circuit from fuse panel. If it has 12v then proceed to your horn pad, your car has an air bag and it is attached to the steering wheel with two torqs 30 bolts that are housed inside a small hole in the back of the steering wheel. Place your steering wheel at 3:00 and you will see the hole in front of speedo. Loosen the bolts and remove the air bag to the point where you can see the black wire attached to the horn ring, check for 12 volts at wire. If there is no voltage you will need to disconnect battery and put a baggy over the negative battery terminal wire end. (If there is voltage the problem is in the ground at the horn ring or the ground on the steering column under the covers.) Now you can remove the connector from air bag module and then remove steering wheel, rock it side to side gently and it will pull off. Be careful of the squib connector so that it doesn't get caught on the wheel when removing. next, clock spring alignment is critical, when the wheel comes off the spring will want to turn in one direction, prevent from turning with a tie wrap. Now you can check the wire to horn with a volt/ohm meter with test lead to bat. and wire with ignition on position 1. Also check the two ground wire connections under the cover and back by the edge of dash pad. Make sure screws are tight.

      Hi Paulii,

Thank you for the detailed instructions on this procedure.
Could I ask you to expand and clarify what you mean when you write:
"If there is no voltage you will need to disconnect battery and put a baggy over the negative battery terminal wire end."

      Again, thanks

      Thanks, OLDDUKE for suggesting this.

I want to be absolutely sure I understand what you mean by "bottom half of steering column cover". Could you clarify that, please?

      Thanks

fao- there is a plastic cover on the top and bottom(halves) of the colulmn between the wheel and the dash. think it is held in place by two screws. look around it. remember the horn switch completes the circuit between the ground and the horn. the hot wire is a direct connection to the horn . the ground wire to the column is on the bottom of the column. disconnect the battery cable to avoid setting off the air bag . oldduke
