1993 940 SRS Code 2-1-2 Steering Wheel Module, Break in wiring 900 1993

I bought the car at an auto auction as a project car a couple weeks ago and am slowly fixing several problems with the aid of a nearly identical 93' parts car. I was hoping the problem was the crash sensor so replaced it but it wasn't the problem. The crash sensors had identical part nos.

The car had been in a collision back in 2000 and today I replaced the left seat belt assembly and got rid of a 2-3-2 error. The bad assembly had blown (cable sticking out of top of charge cylinder), not sure of the proper name.

So, the only SRS error left is the 2-1-2 error and I know nothing about what is being referred to as "Steering Wheel Module, Break in wiring" but enough to not work on anything in that area before disconnecting the battery and asking you folks before taking the steering wheel apart.
Where is the Steering Wheel Module and can I safely replace it with my parts car module without blowing my head off?
Can the airbag be deployed without a signal from the crash sensor?
Is there a place I can get more info. on this?
I'm anxious to replace the module since I think I have one that is good.

Thanks!

Hm, I know the wire under the driver seat, and under the rug, goes up into the steering column and burns out during a collision. I think this same wire is connected to a metal contact ring behind the steering wheel, and if you do work on the steering rack and reconnect after the steering wheel made a full turn in one direction, then when you make a sharp turn you will over-stretch that wire and break it, then the SRS light comes on. My best guess is you have to replace that wire. Your best bet is to buy a green book for the SRS.

      Dear walczyk,

Hope you're well. Before removing a steering wheel, one has to insert a safety screw into the clockspring mechanism, to lock it. The steering wheel can then be removed, without risk to the mechanism.

When replacing the steering wheel, the wire from the clockspring unit to the airbag has to be positioned carefully, so that the wire is not crimped, etc.

If these things be done, then the wires should be fine.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

    Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. You should probably have the Volvo Tech Manual for the SRS system (TP32231/1). It might be available at www.volvotechinfo.com

To remove the steering wheel airbag, You'll need a long T-30 bit: there are two screws, that can be accessed when the steering wheel is at "full lock".

When those screws are removed, the airbag comes out. The "deploy signal" arrives at the airbag via a "clockspring" device, mounted beneath the steering wheel. As the steering wheel turns, the "clockspring" allows contact to be maintained.

The first thing to do is to see if there's obvious damage to the bright orange wire from the clockspring to the airbag. If so, please report, and we'll go from there.

BTW, I've removed the entire airbag system from a 940, including all cables.

Please be 100% sure that you've disconnected the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal, before doing ANY work on the SRS system. An airbag deployment - at close quarters - can be lethal.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

1993 940 SRS Code 2-1-2 Steering Wheel Module, Break in wiring 900 1993

      Hello Spook,

Thanks for getting me started on the SRS 2-1-2 code fix. You led me directly to the problem. The orange wire under the airbag module was indeed broken and it is my opinion that it was broken from when the airbag was deployed after the collision in 2000.
I found a manual online at:
      http://www.volvotips.com/index.php/940-960/volvo-960-service-repair-manual/volvo-960-airbag-service-manual/

It is also for 940s and I'm wondering if it is the same as the TP32231/1 tech manual you mentioned. The manual was pretty good at leading me through the fix and I took the airbag and spring from my parts car and put it on the problem car and the problem was fixed i.e. no more SRS codes.
I also changed the passenger seat belt since it did not deploy the charge when the driver's side did and they are supposed to deploy together.
It bothers me that when the collision occurred back in 2000, a very upscale body shop in Minneapolis repaired the car. I found the paperwork in the glove compartment. How could the body shop put an undeployed airbag module on the car and not change the spring assembly and orange wire? The body shop is right across the street from Borton Volvo and works on upscale cars, Mercedes and etc. This seems highly dishonest since someone driving the car, not worrying or knowing about the SRS light on the dash, and getting in an accident could have been seriously injured when they could have avoided the injury if the airbag was fixed correctly. Okay, enough rambling.
But, thanks again for all your help. I have resolved other problems after reading your great posts.

        Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. You're welcome. When the SRS light is "on", the system is not working. I'm surprised the car made it past state inspections. Usually, any warning light being lit will mean an inspector does not issue a "passed" certificate.

When the SRS devices are triggered, all units are expended: airbags, pyrotechnic seatbelt pre-tensioners, the SRS module, and all SRS cables. That is why an airbag deployment usually "totals" a 940: the cost of these parts - if bought from a dealer - quickly exceeds the value of the car. As you see from the manual, the replacement involves a lot of hours.

In any case, I'm glad you put things to rights.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

          Hi Spook,

Jesse Ventura became governor of MN back in 1999 and did away with state emissions inspections. I don't think there was ever an inspection in MN of anything other than emissions. Maybe someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

          Thanks again
