Overdrive Solenoid 200 1989

Hello All,
Thanks for your eyes and experience. I feel like this is a new variation on an old theme.
I can't get into 4th gear.
My OD light does not turn on - ever. Even when I crank the key to position 2 (all dash lights should be on). The dashboard bulb is fine. I have put in three good bulbs and it is not the bulb.

My OD relay clicks when I push the shifter button - but it has no effect on the light or the overdrive.

Any ideas?

if you have no use for overdrive function, just do the simple/quick thing and install the ipd bypass plate like many have.

I hate to ask this, and take no offense, but are you sure that OD is not working? A good test would be to cruise along at maybe 60mph, light throttle, and hit the button. If you don't notice a downshift, you probably do not have OD.

The function of the OD indicator light is pretty simple. One side of the light gets voltage at all times. When the system is working properly, the relay grounds that light when OD is switched off, through the yellow/red wire that attaches to the back of the instrument cluster. If that yellow/red wire is not attached, you would never see that light. *Do not mix up the yellow/red wire with the red/white tach wire!*

If your relay is clicking, but the light is not coming on, and you have no overdrive, then you may have multiple problems.

Answering Art's question would tell us a lot.

    "Any ideas?"

I dunno. Did it work before?

Doing a thing wrong for a long period of time gives it the superficial appearance of being right.

Thanks for all the responses. To answer your questions and suggestions:
Yes - it has always worked as expected.
      Yes - I am sure I can't get into 4th gear.
Bypass - I use it quite often so I'd rather not bypass it.

I use the bypass constantly as well, which is why I added a manual cutoff switch in the dash that does away with the relay, the shifter switch and the problem wiring there. I would be glad to walk you through that if you like, but the OD system is not that complicated, and I am sure we can get yours up an running again in a stock configuration.

I have had the OD fail on every 240 I have driven, and it never once was the solenoid, but was often the solenoid wiring (under the car, in the transmission tunnel), and once the relay.

So you wouldn't exactly agree with Roger D. Scott. :)

Say, you did try to replace the relay, right? Or attempt the microsurgery?

Frankly, I can't imagine a naturally-occuring fault that would leave you with a clicking relay and no light, simultaneously explaining the lack of 4th gear. That is the point at which I stop speculating, and suggest you get a test light and trace the function. Be glad to work with you.

Start by checking for juice on the white wire leaving the relay for the solenoid.
