what about the purolator oil filter for the240 200

hi sages- does anybody have any experience with the purolator classic oil filter for the 240 volvo engine. i have a 92 245 with a 5 speed and a b230f engine. the car is in good condition and im trying to make it last. i know the mann oil filter is recommended here. i last changed the oil about 4k miles ago with quaker state 10-30 rated at api sn and put in a mann oil filter. its about time to change oil again. plan to use the quaker state again. this is a name brand oil with a good rating. sn is the highest rating a regular oil can get i believe. i have heard here that frams are not good filters for volvos. some here have said wix is better. the 240 calls for a purolator classic L14670. it claims a 98% filtration efficiency. it is made in the usa and the company is the oldest oil filter producer in the country. have never had any problem with their oil filter in other cars. bought one at wal mart for 3.27 which is 1/2 the cost of mann. 245 is used in suburban driving and doesnt use oil between changes. anybody here have any experience with this filter and oil. thanks tons oldduke

I have been to the Mann site and they state that their brand has all the specifications and features that their OE filters have.

Does Fram or others make this claim?

Do a search on line for this topic - there are plenty of postings and experiments on this topic.

One thing you can do easily is to cut a filter open and make your own judgement on the contents of each brand.

I have also been using these Purolator L14670 filters and the Manns. Have been using 15W-40 oil in the B23F engine for over 29 years, mostly Shell Rotella T. Try to keep the oil and filter changed every 3-4 months.

hi salty- 3 questions: how is 15-40 superior to 10-30. would think the 15-40 is thicker and slower flowing which wouldnt be good. 2d rotella and quaker state are both rated sn on the api. does the rotella have any additional additives like zddp? you use a shorter oil change than the owners manual says. i do 4k between changes mostlysuburban short trips and an occassional ihour highway trip. what think you? thanks tons oldduke

        Duke,
The Charlotte, N.C. dealer where I bought Volvo new in 1984 used Kendall 15W-40 oil for its' scheduled oil changes. Since I couldn't find this Kendall oil in 1 gallon jugs, I bought what I found available, Phillips Super HD II 15W-40. Most of my driving back then was what the owner's manual referred to as "adverse conditions" (sustained driving in dusty/sandy conditions; sustained low speed driving or idling; and driving short distances at low temperatures). I also used this grade because it it was a "fleet oil", used in diesel engines under extreme conditons.
I don't know about Rotella having the ZDDP additive. I think there's a synthetic Rotella now, as well as a mid-grade Rotella. Shell changed their Rotella line a few years ago. I've several jugs left of the original Rotella. I'm looking at ECO POWER, a recycled oil made by Safety-Kleen. If the specs and the prices per jug compare, I'm considering changing to it.
My current driving is way less than 7500 miles per year. I'm trying to adhere to the "adverse conditions" (every 3rd month) oil and filter changes.
Sorry for the long post. Hope this helps.

        "Salty"

If your driving under 7500 miles per year, I would honestly change to calender-base oil change schedule. I know I have for my 940. In short, change your oil when you change your clocks. If you are using synthetic and normally get the car up to operating temp for at least 5 minutes each time you drive it, I would change my oil ever time I changed the clock forward...just like your smoke alarm battery.

Quaker State and Pennzoil are the same company now. Have found the shell is very thin on these filters unlike the Mann which I always use. Have used these as they were part of the Pepboys oil change rebate for 8 and 9 bucks including 5 qts of Qstate and or Penzoil. Im out of Manns and have 6 of these so they are up next again.

    Hi Oldduke -

You need a filter with a good anti-drainback valve to help with cold starts. It looks like that Purolator has such a valve.

    Good luck!

hi nick- not sure how critical the anti drain back valve is here because the volvo 240 oil filter when installed sits installed with the tank or shell pointing downward at about a 45 degree angle. this would mean that most of the oil would stay in the filter when the engine is off. i believe the purpose of antidrain back valves in oil filters which are located at the center screw hole of the filter is to prevent oil from draining back in to the pan through the center hole and causing a momentary dry start which clearly is no good for the engine. some engines had these spin on filters mounted upright at almost a 90 degree angle which would allow the oil in the filter to drain back during shutoff. chrysler slant sixes were designed like this, but many of these had a long standpipe up the center of the oil pump base where the filter screwed on so the oil would stay in the filter. i know this was true because when i took off many of these slant six filters the oil would gush out of the filter when i pulled it up. for many years now most spin on oil filters have had an antidrain back valve built in. do you think this valve is needed on a volvo 240 engine. it may be a good back up if you park the 240 on a steep left leaning slope. let em know what you think. oldduke

    Oil filter opinions 200

Would that I could I'd have you add some white space....

Whether I got all you wrote or not, I will comment I used to read the Bob is the Oil Guy forum back when it was minimopar or whatever, and used Purolator filters, that they were easy to acquire at Walmart and had such stellar acclaim on the list.

Then, when I started collecting 240's and using synthetic oil, I switched to Mann filters, which were less expensive (at the time, anyway) in bulk, and provided that anti-drainback function.

Since then, it seems our Walmart (at least) has gone all Orange. Do a search on OKOD here on Brickboard for opinions on that.
