1995 960 power steering squeal 900

Hi all,

This is a 1995 960 wagon.

I am hearing a squealing sound coming from my steering when I am in a parking lot turning the wheel while driving slowly...with the windows down. It sounds like a belt is slipping but I am wondering how that could be with the automatic tensioner? The belt is in perfect shape. Power steering fluid is exactly where it should be. I am thinking either the tensioner is losing some of its tension or something is up with the power steering pump. I can move the tensioner by hand from right to left, facing the front of the car. Is that normal? Is there a litmus test for the tensioner that I can perform?

I am also thinking that the more squealing I hear, the more unusual wear on my belt which I really do not want to be without when I am out and about.

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

Any ideas on this one? Can anyone give me any idea on how stiff my tensioner should be? I can move it fairly easily but that might be how it has always been.
I cannot imagine it would be the power steering pulley but I will check that also.

    Thamks,
    Jim Lee

How many miles on this car? I ask because one of the symptoms that I experienced was a loud pump noise, both times it was for a few weeks then failure of the shaft seal. It started at what I thought was a belt squeak. That seems to be every 150k miles or so and that is with fluid changes every 50k.

As far as the serp tensioner, they do collect dirt and it can alter it's range of motion and tension. I just replaced mine this weekend and cannot move the belt tensioner by applying pressure to the belt.

        131k miles on my 960.
This is not a loud noise..........yet.
I only happened to hear it because I was in a parking lot moving the wheel alot without the car moving more than a few mph. Like backing out of a space.
I don't think I would have heard it is the window was up.

I can move the belt tensioner pulley without much effort by hand.
I also thought about the bearing in the pump but I am pretty sure it is
a belt slipping sound more than a bearing.

        Thanks very much,
        Jim Lee
