Shifter linkage broke! 200 1989

I swear! If this wasn't such a good car...

Put it in reverse and the shifter got real loose real fast. Looked underneath and found that the shifter rod is not attached at the front half. I'd assume this needs to swivel to adjust the linkage. This L bracket has a piece of rod in it which is grooved for an e-clip. I assume it was swaged on there so it could spin. Any ideas for a permanent fix? Does Volvo still make this thing? I googled but came up empty.

Mine almost did the same until I re-peened the end; but I determined that the reason for the wear was largely due to the extra slop introduced by a lack of shifter bushings. Check your shifter bushings and replace if necessary.

I'm sure you can find a used one cheaply, if you don't have the metal working skills to make a repair or re-engineer the end. A post in the Turbobricks wanted forum would probably be answered very quickly.

I had the shift linkage come apart on my '93 . I repaired it temporarily with (3) small interlinked hose clamps . I then peened it back together when I got home . I left the hose clamps in place as re-inforcement . There is no way that shifter can come disconnected with those on there .

The part is still available new the last time I checked.

IIRC, the area at the end that broke is peened onto the bracket like a rivet and is supposed to a little loose.

Although I have not done this repair, I read that at least one person was able to remove both pieces and re-peen the end. I think there is supposed to be a washer on the original set up and that washer was probably lost when the linkage broke.

    Good luck.

yes there is a hard rubber washer or at least there was one when the part was new. I have used tie raps to help take up some of the slack or movement.

Thanks for the input,y'all! I'll see if I can find it at Volvo, though I'm scared of how much they're going to charge me. I'll try and fix this one, first.

        There were no bushings,
