Failing AMM? 200 1983

Driving home from work on Thurs.(235 mile trip)92 degrees out, my car starts intermittenly stalls and starts right back up. never had to pullover. It does it several times during the trip. Drives great otherwise, fuel mileage dropped by 5 mpg. hwy. next morning wont start. Run through series of test. =
no spark from coil-replaced coil, now intermittent spark. for the heck of it i replaced 25 amp fuse. (checked it earlier, cleaned it and looked good. )
Today Sat. (71 degrees)still no start, disconnect AMM starts. Plug AMM in starts again and seems to run fine. Small surge, not much on tach.
Is my AMM failing or coincidence? did i have vapor lock or is it something happening?

Thanks

The mention of "intermittent spark" in conjunction with the subject of this thread reminded me of a syndrome I suspected of providing me with a degraded AMM on an 83.

Years ago I had a no-start because the resistor in the distributor rotor opened up. The spark would be intermittent because of the added hurdle inside the rotor, but also, the coil wire drapes right over the AMM harness. With that additional spark gap, the potential for leakage along the coil-to-distributor wire is greatly increased, and in my case the wires (insulation) were not in great shape.

I suspected at the time this may have damaged the electronics in the AMM although the overall consensus is heat, age, and moisture migration is blamed.

Anyway, bottom line, check your rotor. It should read about 1000 ohms on your ohmmeter. Consider looking for a way to keep the coil wire separated from the engine wiring harness. The later cars have a plastic clip attaching to a brake line to hold the wire clear.

I had sever stumbling/surging engine problems that started off very mildly.

They went away after replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator (some improvement) and then the AMM.

All the Ohm tests on the AMM were the same as years prior to the problem.

After replacing the AMM with salvaged original equipment from a parts car that had previously run fine the stumbling/surging stopped.

Given the heat issue you may benefit from checking to see if the preheat hose thermostat in the air box has failed and is throwing hot air at your AMM with the reported results of burning it out.

I fixed my air box thermostat by blocking it closed. I live South of Washington DC at 39 degree N latitude (+/-) so the winter temps are not sever enough to warrant the need for the preheat air.

Just a quick thought: Check the plug on the ICU over by the washer reservoir. Make sure it is solidly attached and held in place by wire ties all the way arund the unit.

How is your wiring harness? Original or replacement?
