Weird short after dash change 200 1992

I found a crack free dash and a small clock to upgrade the 92 sedan. I changed out the dashboard and all went well-or so I thought. I didn't use the headlights at all but last night I drove it and when you turn on the headlights lights, there are no dash illumination lights and the dash arrows light up and the tachometer loses about 500rpm. using the emergency flashers causes the dash center console illumination lights to flicker in sync. and the tach needle dips. I have a short but I can't figure out where.I have unplugged and re-plugged various instrumentation, the clock connector and tach wire, etc. Help! I drive a lot at night and need my dash illumination lights. Thanks in advance, Greg

Ah ha! Art, you have solved the mystery. It explains why I didn;t have the issue before when I replaced the blower on that car, I disconected the battery that time, but did not this time when I did the dash. *%^$! An expensive lesson on a 92! So, if I find a 92-93 wagon, and only need the circuit board for my sedan, that should work, correct? If I swap the speedo out from the sedan, that should read correctly because the speedo reads the output signal from the diff, right?

You probably left a ground loose or off. There are several ground wires at center console screws.

So I swapped the cluster from my 93 into the 92 and voila, no more problems. But the 92's cluster in the 93 shows the same faults as it originally had in the 92. So it appears I have a bad cluster circuit board or at least some bad solder joints. I will be at a Pick n pull to grab a new cluster and swap out the speedo. Weird that after all the times that I have pulled the cluster to change bulbs, install a tach, fix the compensation board that it suddenly went bad this time. Weird!

I should have seen your post before. It has come up several times in the 14 years I've been haunting this list.

When you swap the dash, you don't disconnect the battery (or remove fuse 8) so the clock remains powered. Just one slip and a tiny spark later, a trace opens up on the cluster board. Here's a place it happened on someone's cluster many years ago.

For that reason, I include the battery step in my dash removal pict.
