240 Idle Issue 200 1983

I've been dealing with a rough/surging idle on my 1983 245 DL. What I've done so far:

new plugs, wires, cap, rotor
clean throttle body
new FI temp sensor
clean flame trap
new injector seals
clean idle air control valve

I suspect the idle air control valve. It is of the three wire variety. I applied 12V from center terminal(-) to each of the other two and heard a click one way but not the other. After doing that I adjusted the base idle with the knob under the throttle body and when I reconnected the IACV the idle did pick up. I'm still not convinced that this is not my problem.

I did a resistance test as per Bentley and was in the neighborhood of what it should be but I've never felt that "buzzing" that should be occurring when the valve operates.

Also, when I pulled the IACV out, I found a bare wire coming out of the harness behind it. I traced that to a female spade connector as shown in attached photo. I read somewhere about there being a grand wire attached to the IACV mounting plate and mine doesn't have one. Should the bare wire be mounted to the plate and then that spade connector grounded somewhere?

Just a followup to my problem. I have pretty much straightened everything out. I believe the primary vacuum leak was coming from a split in the larger hose where it fits to the flame trap. I replaced everything with the extension kit from IPD.

I also replaced the fuel pump check valve which was a bit of an adventure. A few years ago, under roadside conditions where I though the fuel pump died, I replaced it with an aftermarket type. That problem turned out to be the 25 amp fuse under the hood but I stashed the original Bosch pump for a spare. In dealing with a warm start issue I bought a new check valve (a Bosch from IPD) and it turns out that the Brand X pump has different threads so I put the old Bosch pump back in. Things are a bit better but I think I need to make up a tee and test the pressure at the fuel rail. I'm thinking it goes to zero as soon as the car is turned off for a bit.

You call it a surging idle.
Does this only happens during idle and it is not a stumbling during operation?

You should be able to isolate the IAC to determine its function, though you seem to be thinking it works "sometimes".

- try blocking the air path to the IAC from the accordion tube (air intake), by wrapping a zip lock bag over the male nipple and clamping the hose back over it - this should choke out the engine so it does not start. If it doesn't, you have other air leaks. It seems to me there is little interference from the ECU during idle so this may not tell you anything regarding the surging - then I do not know your '83 and do not know if it even has and ECU.
- pull the IAC and clean and lubricate the valve (see other posts) - this may resolve an intermittent issue. Of course track down that wire - I have nothing to offer there.

My '88 has a TPS that played havoc with my idle. In my case it was only in the recovery function that played out as the idle not recovering quick enough and after adjustment recovering then revving to 2000. I ended up replacing the TSP and that fixed that part of the idle problem. I would seem possible that if the TSP is suffering a failure it would alternately tell the engine the throttle is open and closed and cause idle fluctuations. Again I do not know what is on you '83.
