940 Turbo turns into steam engine 900 1994

My wife's '94 945T has been losing coolant for some time but not leaking. The trans fluid looks clean so I've suspected the head gasket. On the way to work today she called that the CEL was on and there was "a lot of steam coming from the rear of the car." She didn't check the temp gauge. Before she could park it, steam was coming out from under the car.

When I got there it took two gallons of 50/50 to top up the expansion tank. I'm pretty sure the head gasket is toast, the car has 165,000 miles on it and it's the OEM gasket.

I'm moving away from DIY as age, health and family obligations are taking priority so I'm calling around for estimates. What would be a ballpark if the head needs resurfacing? If I DIY, I'm hoping to just put a gasket in and go.

Having dealt with the exhaust manifold gasket replacement on my '88 745T I don't relish the idea of doing that part again, so is it possible to pull the head with the exhaust manifold attached, then separate the ex manifold on the bench by unbolting the turbo?

Thanks,

ER

I'd go ahead and swap the heater hoses and if all is well, drive it until the head gasket does leak. $2000 is steep! I just paid a machine shop $400 to resurface, pressure test, ultrasonic clean, do a valve job, and machine flat the exhaust manifold. It turns out the exhaust manifold was in the worst shape as far as not being flat... they charged $40 for that work. I think resurfacing was about $100 on the itemized bill. The valve work was $200. Yes, you could remove the head with the intake and exhaust manifolds attached and disassemble everything else on the table.

    Good luck!

probably $250 - $350 to mill the head depending on where you are but go to a local engine shop, not a dealer.

I've tried numerous methods to pull B230x heads and did actually pull one successfully on a 940T once without pulling the turbo but did have to detach the ExMani. You may be able to pull the head + exh mani + turbo as a unit but you may need to replace individually.

May have dodged a bullet. Just went to retrieve the car and put another gallon in the expansion tank. Drove about 5 miles, temp normal, then pulled over to check water. The top of the engine was all wet. Something was spraying water but couldn't tell from where. Put in another gallon and drove the remaining three miles home.

The intake side of the valve cover was very wet but there was water sprayed everywhere. Letting it idle for 10 minutes produced a geyser from under the intake manifold. Flexing a heater hose at the firewall made it come and go.

It's a split heater hose near the block. It's time to replace all the rubber under the hood as I had an alternator belt, turbo intake hose, expansion tank hose fail in the last six months.

Wish me luck that the head survived. It never overheated by the temp gauge. (whistling in the dark)

I've gotten two quotes of $2,000 to replace a head gasket and all related gaskets, camshaft seals etc, including head skimming if needed. Not going to happen!

        Dear Erwin,

Hope you're well. If you'd not otherwise do so, get Volvo brand heater hoses. They last about a dozen years: more in northern areas (Canada, Scandanavia, northern Russia/USA) and less in tropical/desert environments (North Africa, Central America, southern India, southeast Asia, etc.).

Be sure to replace the heater control valve, as that likely is at the end of its service life.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

as far as an estimate, sorry. everyone's different. just be aware it will need milling or replacing. I've seen them warp .035-.040 from an overheat. not just a head gasket. good luck, chuck.
