Spark Plug Wire Question 900 1994

Hey all,

After spending a serious amount of time in "search" mode here and in the FAQ, and elsewhere on the web, this nagging question remains:

When I look up the Bougicord ignition wire set (namely, Bougicord 271483 from FCP Groton), the description does NOT specify the set is "OK" for use on a 945 with the in-glass rear antenna. The only fitment note is "for Bosch type ignition only." (I do have the Bosch-type ignition, not Regina.)

Meanwhile, chatter on the web (not validated) says that while the Bosch-brand wire sets are sold in two versions (for B230FT cars with window antenna, and those without), the Bougicord sets are sold just ONE way, because superior shielding eliminates the question.

Is 271483 the right Bougicord set? The Bougicord website itself is of no help, and the FCP Groton salesperson said he doesn't think it's the right one.

(P.S. -- No, I don't want Bosch wires as I have read too many negative things...)

Thanks for your thoughts!

Spark Plug Wire Question 900 1994

    Dear GregR,

Hope you're well. An on-line parts database shows that Volvo Part #271483 fits a wide range of cars with B230 engines (turbo and non-turbo) - 240s, 740s, 760s, 780s, and 940s - from 1987-1995 (inclusive).

I do not know if this set includes the coil wire. The FCP Groton rep should be able to tell you if the set consists of four plug wires, or if a coil wire is included. As some 940s (and presumably other models) have a block-mounted distributor, a longer coil wire is needed versus models with a head-mounted distributor. Thus, I'd guess you'll have to buy a coil wire as a separate item.

The in-window antenna was installed in the 1994 and 1995 940s sold in North America. Models sold in 1993 and earlier had an external antenna.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Spark Plug Wire Question 900 1994

      Hi Spook,

Thanks very much for looking it up. So...

If that part number is shown without regard to "window antenna" or not, then... I will assume that it is "OK" for cars with the window antenna. (I believe it was included on 945s in 1994 and 1995. My former '93 945 had a retracting mast antenna.)

FYI, FCP adds the coil wire to the set to create a complete five-wire set, but under the same part number.

      Thanks again.

Spark Plug Wire Question 900 1994

        Dear Greg R,

Hope you're well. You're welcome. I concur in your conclusion. That said, since I don't use the radio in my car, I don't care about any interference/static caused by inadequate shielding on plug wires. You're right about the shift from external, retracting-mast antenna, having started with the 1994 model year.

If FCP adds the coil wire, I presume that's also Bougicord, and of the correct length for the distributor-type. Cars with Rex-Regina ignition/fuel management need need a distinct coil wire, to connect to the box-like coil unit, mounted on the driver's-side strut tower.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
