Rear window jamming up occasionally - what's worn/needing lube? 700 1990

90 740 turbo:

The rear window sometimes sticks and will not go up unless I drop the window down and then put it back up. There's a separate issue where on really hot days, the windows will go down and not up, but that does not appear related.

I think something in the scissors must be worn enough that it's moving too far this way or that when I put the window down only a little and then back up.

Any suggestions? I need to pull the door apart and look at the lock for that door because it's not locking anymore and the lock knob seems to be jammed. Oh, joy :P

Cheers

My experience with 7/9 series window mechanisms points to the pivot point between the two arms (forming an "X").

It does not take much wear to create an uneven up movement. If you find that it is not simply loose or missing screws you may need to replace the mechanism. Because the driver's window usually gets more use they are usually the first to go so finding a good rear window may not be a huge problem.

That link will lead to my post about replacing the mechanism in a driver's door.

Good luck,
Randy

I found that sometimes the 'tuning forks' (white plastic guides in the door that pins slide on) Onkel mentions are worn. You can flip them over, or get good ones for the rear at the JY.

Lock; in fixing the locks on my 92 I learned a lot. One issue was that one solenoid locked up solid; could not be moved even when out of the car and pulled with my full weight with large tools.
BTW, the relay for the locks is Not the silver 'K' relay but the one next to it.

Likely, if it is not severe, you have loose screws or the tuning forks are gone/worn out/sitting int he bottom of the door. Check for loose screws first as this is a common issue after 24 years ins a services...the motor/regulator will bind if it is twisting due to poor alignment due to loose screws.

If it is loos screws and it has been going on for a while, plan to re-shape or replace the arms for the regulator.

Yep, the motor's binding. And I maybe had the screws loosened at some point to fiddle with the latch. Hahaha.... so I know what to look at.

Thanks everybody
