Power Steering pump groaning....replace or wait for failure? 700 1992

Daughter's 1992 745 non-turbo has a steering pump that groans when turning. should I wait til it fails, then replace or do a preemptive strike and replace it before the coming failure?
Or is groaning a normal way these pumps 'talk' to the owner?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I also got a good result from flushing the power steering with new fluid.

I'd try a new belt first.

OK, but it is not squealing( like it would with a worn out belt, belt is less than 2 years old). The power steering pump growls whenever I turn the wheel, especially at low speeds.
      Thanks,

Was it made in China or the USA?

Remove fluid from reservoir with turkey baster (or whatever). Fill with mobil 1 synthetic atf. Drive for a week then repeat. This will cost you 5 bucks and is definitely worth trying before changing any parts.

Sounds like a good plan. Will do so upon return from road trip up to New England from Austin this month.

Second this. For mine, I removed the return line, pointed it into a container and flushed it until I had nice clean fluid (red ATF for its anti-foaming and less hideous cleanup). It helped with turning and noise. I did enventually replace the pump, but only because the bracket (flawed design) wore and the front pulley bushing was damaged.

            1) Check the level of the fluid
            2) Check the pump and make sure it cannot move laterally (side to side along the belt path. If it can, the bracket may be shot)
            3) Flush/refill the fluid

            Good Luck!

Maybe try this additive: Lubegard - Power Steering Fluid Protectant. Look it up, it has a very solid reputation and track record.

I had stiff steering wheel in morning symptoms. Added this stuff and after a few days the problem completly disappeared. I had replaced my ps fluid with synthetic a few months prior to symptoms.

Make sure there's enough fluid in the reservoir and no air in the system. Air will get in if level is allowed to drop too much. Best way to purge is to crank steering lock to lock several times with pump running, either with front wheels jacked up or on some slippery pads.
