Steering Screeeeeech with A/C on. 91 240 200

The steering on my 91 240 has always, well for as long as I can remember at least 10 years or more, been stiff when turning to the left in the morning. Replacing the steering u-joint didn't help.

I recently had a guy flush out the power steering (hate to admit it but I had never done it and we bought the car new in '91). He said the pump wasn't circulating, and ended up flushing it twice. Now, the steering intermittently catches when turning either way, but I only get a loud screech with the A/C on, throughout the turning of the wheel.

The drive belts have less than 1000 miles on them and are tensioned correctly - I replaced them all when doing the timing belt and water pump a couple months ago. I also replaced all the mount bushings for the power steering pump.

Getting the car ready for my youngest to drive as she just got her permit. Think a new pump is in order? Any thoughts would be appreciated - thanks!

Dave

What is the condition of the rubber accessory mounts for the PS pump?

Look from the top and see if the PS pulley is parallel with the crank pulley and there appears to be a straight line between the 2 pulleys.

      Hi Dan -

They're new within the last few months. I'll recheck alignment, but I think it is good.

Unless they Volvo OEM rubber or aftermarket poly...it can still be the bushings.

Interesting - got them from FCP Groton..... they are neither. How can I tell if they are the issue?

Look at them. They will be collapsed so the bolts are no longer in the center of the mount.

More importantly, look at the alignment of the belts. They should run true with non of the pulleys cocked out of plane.

Normally the PS pump does not go bad but the alignment has a couple of issues with 90% of the problems being bad bushings (on PS pump or the AC unit for B230's) with the other 10% being corrected by shimming out the pump mounting bracket.

It was alignment..... I pulled the bushings thuinking they would be an issue and they were fine. Replaced them with new anyway.

The pulley was still clearly off about 1/16", in toward the drivers side of the car and out toward the center. A little careful work with a crowbar and it is straight now..... more importantly, the noise is gone, and I have power assisted steering for the first time in a long time, through the full range to the left and right.

              Thanks guys!
