M41 transmission repair 120-130

Hi everyone,
I'm in the middle of rebuilding my m41 transmission and I'm having issues getting the layshaft out. Drifting the shaft out with a hammer and brass punch I managed to get the shaft just inside the case and then it stopped. I'm afraid of hammering too hard since I have already cracked one of the spacer rings and I know some of these parts are NLA. According to all the literature I've read, the shaft is driven out backwards but my question to all of you in the know is this. Can the layshaft be installed in reverse? I seem to remember that the shaft is of different diameters at each end.
For those of you with a transmission sitting around, can you see numbers stamped into the layshaft when you look at the back or front of the transmission?

I have done this once before with no problems, but this time it's causing me some grief.I just want to make sure that I am not trying to press the shaft out the wrong way. I am now in the hunt for someone that will let me use a press to do it better.
Thanks for all the input guys and have a great weekend,
Klaus

Haynes is pretty good for gearbox rebuilds but Phil's more personal account linked to here, if you haven't been there, is also very informative.

The numbers are stamped on the end of the shaft that is visible at the back of the transmission.

If numbers are visible at the front of the transmission, someone installed the shaft incorrectly and may have damaged the case.

What number is stamped into the shaft? I hope it is 380157 as the spacer rings may still be available new and if not, I have lots of them.

If the number is 380808, those are not available new, but I have a limited supply of good used ones.

      Hi Eric,
Thanks for the reply, it's appreciated.
Yeah the shaft numbers are in the back so at least it's in the proper way but unfortunately the number is 380808. There's a volvo repair place near here that says that they have some m41 transmissions minus the o/d and wouldn't ask too much for them so I may drive out there and see how much they want for a spare trans. At least then I'll have some spares.
If that proves unsuccessful, do you mind if I give you a call and buy 2 spacers from you?
      Thanks again,
      klaus
