Fuel Pressure Regulator (an observation) 700 1989

I did all sorts of things to make sure my FPR was good - vacuum leak checks and all of that. Then I failed emissions with high CO. Also, my exhaust pipe was sooting up.

As I was fiddling around with the vacuum line off the FPR and revving the RPM's I noticed out of the corner of my eye a slight dribble coming out of the open vacuum port of the FPR.

Sure enough, the diaphragm had sprung a tiny leak that wasn't readily detectable with normal troubleshooting techniques. I'm guessing that this lets excess fuel into the manifold which doesn't burn completely and causes the sooting in the tail pipe and high CO.

Does this ring true with anyone? I'll post back when I pass that pesky safety check.

I was able to get the carbons down quite a bit but apparently not enough. The only way we could pass the smog check was to open a huge vacuum leak. Although she runs a lot better, the smog machine says its not good enough.

Since she is gonna be 25 years old next time around, I won't have to get the smog checked, only safety items, which will be a huge relief!

Thanks for validating my efforts, then!

It doesn't look like Brickboard has a way to post videos. So, I posted three short ones on youtube of these efforts including one on how I did an intercooler blowdown (to remove excess oil).

Here's the relevant one. Really good video -- you're obviously way ahead of the average cell phone car doctor. No, BB doesn't host videos -- use youtube for that and just embed. My guess is once you pull the vac line off of the regulator, you will need to be patient until the leaking fuel reaches the level of the port to make a good showing at the nipple.

    BINGO!

that's why we recomend the simple sniff test on that front hose before going to hooking up Gauges

The diaphragm is ruptured and you need to replace the FPR and change the oil as it may be fuel contaminated.

This is a common test recommended to troubleshoot the FPR, remove the vacuum hose and smell for gas or the presence of fuel.
