filling the m47 and repairing the 240 volvo automatic trans 200

hi sages- two questions . the 5 speed manual trans in my 92 240 is filled with atf. some posters on this forum advise to overfill it by tipping it to the left which will allow you to fill it above the fill bolt hole . is this really necessary. the volvo owners manual says to fill it to the bottom of the holewhen the trans is level. wondering if overfilling it risks forcing atf out the front bearing cover . also what would be a reasonable r and r cost to rebuild a volvo 240 automatic trans. i surmise it would be at least $2000. im guessing the failure of the auto trans in volvos is a reason some of them get junk yarded. many otherwise good cars but older cars american and foreign go to the yard when the auto trans repair costs are prohibitive which they usually are. your thoughts? thanks tons oldduke

The AW70 automatic in later 240's is pretty bulletproof. If it ever goes, the most cost effective method would be to find a good used one in a junkyard. Failure is rare below 300k miles. When I sold my 90 240 at 300k, the original AW70 was still shifting well but it did have a couple of leaks...
