P0500 Speed Sensor code 900 1997

The CEL in my 97 960 has been on for the past while, and I am having a hard time figuring out what the problem is.
Background: this car gets maybe 1500 kilometers use per year, and has 140K kilometers on it. The CEL came on after a long trip hauling a cargo trailer, during which the last 150 miles was through slush, freezing rain and snow. The CEL came on the next day when I started the car. My immediate suspicion was that some of that moisture got into the harness somewhere. However ,after the car sat in the garage for the past few months, during which time everything should have dries, the CEL is still on.
My Napa-quality OBD reader says it is code P0500, speed sensor. I disconnected and cleaned the contacts on the three large connections on the driver side of the transmission, no joy there.
What should I be looking at next? This car has the IWRS rear end, so I am not sure where the harness on the diff, or even if there is one for this model.
The car runs fine, and everything seems to work, but I can't cancel the CEL, and I hate driving the car while it is on.
TIA
JD
