Nearly new AutoZone front calipers covering themselves in light rust ... 200 1991

Sort of new, less than year owld. A light rust coat is forming on these nearly new brake calipers.

I guess there is no finish on these rebuilt calipers, then?

They work okay. No problems.

Suggestions other than avoid AutoZone?

Thanks,

Dud

Did you paint them? They are bare steel...

No. I guess I have to do that, too.

I was under a wrong impression that these were coated somehow to prevent rust like they come from the factory.

      Crap.

No where does it state in the literature with these replacement, rebuilt calipers, they require painting.

      Lovely.

Thank you Uncle walrus3. Someday I'll have that 164.

      These 240s, well, I dunno.

      Thank you,

I have made the same mistake in the past. I thought for the $100 cost of the caliper (ABS) perhaps the rebuilder had used a fast and cheap yellow chromate coating, or maybe a galvanizing strike, or SOMETHING.

The problem is, painting them is difficult: either you paint before and spill brake fluid down your new paint, stripping it off, or you paint after and get overspray on everything. Or use a brush, I suppose, but I have not seen high temp brush-on paint in the stores.

Next time, I'm polishing and nickel plating my calipers. I'll need some spoke wheels so people can see them...

          Hi Sean,

Do you have any Ollies outlets nearby you? At all of the Ollies I frequent in the spray paint section they have caliper paint kits-I can't remember for sure without checking my box in the basement, but I'm pretty sure it is brush on.

Nope, never even seen an Ollie's, Travis - I take that back; my brother-in-law said one went in in Fredericksburg, about 40 miles south of me. Maybe I'll have to go check it out. I drove down there five days a week in college, but now it seems too darn far...

Hi Uncle Sean and Uncle Travis,

Welp, I'll have to do something. No Ollies in the mighty PacNW. Yet I'll seek such kits, yet have to prep the surface first. I guess no POR-15 here on already installed brake caliper.

I spray away any brake fluid. Yet that's a really active area with the heat, road grime, and brake dust (Volvo OEM made in India pads in there).

I presumed these had some sort of finish. I just can't believe it. Rather ridiculous, but stupid of me not to notice.

            Thank you.

Mr. Daft yet Rusty lightly Brake Caliper.

That's normal, I don't worry about painting them. All that matters is were they rebuilt correctly so they work.

as the others mentioned.. I paint the calipers.. Rustoleum holds up as well as anything. The Calpiers shouldn't ever get screaming hot to burn it off.
