AC/Heater Control problem 700

1988-740

The air conditioner/heater control stopped working properly. This is the NON-climate control model. The top control slider that moves to the different levels of air conditioning etc. in stuck in one position, thankfully at max cooling for this time of year, and won't move. The slider worked properly until a few days ago. The temperature slider works perfectly.

I have looked thru most of the FAQ, but can find nothing concerning this. Does anybody have thoughts on where to start looking?

Thanks, James

OK, got the control out and the problem is that the plastic pin that holds together the vacuum unit had come out and blocked the travel of the selector. The tabs on the pin had broke and allowed the pin to fall out.

No luck yet finding a replacement pin. Anyone know of a source for the pin?

    Thanks, James

Pin? There is a lock-type washer.

      Here's a photo:

Great picture Dan...the part in question is on the far left of the photo...the one with several orange tubes connected to the plastic piece colored in white and black. The black and white pieces are held together with a "pin" with "barbs" that pushes thru a hole in the center of both pieces and locks the two pieces together. One end of the pin looks like the round white thing in the center of the big orange piece. It can't be seen in the photo. Just not sure what to call the piece.

Anyway, I found a 3/8" long bolt with nut and two washers and got it back together and working so far. Not sure how long that will last. I'll be looking at the web site of the fastener place.

I did find a complete used unit for $75, but thought that was too much when all that's needed is a 50 cents part.

        Thanks for your reply.

        James

That appears to be not a lock washer, but a round spring push-on nut. Should be available from machine supply stores, Fastenal etc. or online from a metric source like Aarons Push Nuts: http://www.aaronspushnuts.com/

I would say the control is simply worn out. They can be removed with care and patience. Try the junk yard for better one and get to know the part for replacing yours. Or trying looking into yours, maybe something is stuck and lubricant would help?

These control units are GM/AC-Delco made, mediocre quality and design.
