Random Metallic Clicking Noise on Acceleration 200 1993

Just started on my Daughters 93 240 automatic continuous random metallic clicking noises on acceleration. It only does it accelerating, once you get to speed it goes away and does not do it at idle. Hard to tell where it is coming from but appears to be from the front seats to the back of the car on the outside under the car.

I have removed all the exhaust heat shields and this noise does not appear to be exhaust related.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Dan

Maybe a loose piece of honeycomb from the cat that rolls around then gets wedge as it heats up.Also check to make sure the front brakes have their cotter pins in place.Center support driveshaft spring out of whack. Or a failing u-joint.

Thanks for the ideas I will have to check them out.

My daughter thinks it is getting better so perhaps whatever is doing this is wearing down, like a loose or displaced screw or something.

    Hi Dan,

"Hard to tell where it is coming from but appears to be from the front seats to the back of the car on the outside under the car."

I had very similar symptom just like it. I couldn't figure it out for awhile...

I am guessing that it was my rear muffler/pipe detaching sound traveling back to the middle section of the car.

Found out after 2000 miles or 4 weeks later...

Thanks, I have looked closely at the exhaust and how it is hung. I have removed all the heat shields that typically rattle.

        Hi Dan,

Your problem may be different than mine but your description sounds so familiar...

I thought that my CAT was going south.

It only did it during acceleration.

Once I got 30 mph and up, it went away.

Nothing at idle. Heard nothing from my rear muffler.

        Hope you find it soon.

Thanks, my noise continues as long as I'm accelerating, it goes away as soon as you are just cruising at speed.

May be described like a chirping sound.

Am I the only one that has had this problem?
      Thanks

What I want for Christmas is a 16-channel analog data logger with at least a dozen magnetic remote wireless microphones. Failing that request, I've sometimes had good results by the favor of someone who can ride along with me who has better hearing in both ears than I have, and cares about "car noises."

Is the noise random in the sense of repetition?

Yes it does not repeat at a certain time interval/ frequency and is not related to speed of the car or RPM of the engine. It is continuous while the engine is under load and goes away if speed is maintained or slowing down.

I have set the emergency brake and played with the throttle to get it to make the clicking /clacking noise. Standing next to the engine it appears to be coming from the engine, perhaps engine/ transmission. Can anything loosen in the area of the flywheel or torque converter?

Does not appear to be fan belt related.

          Thanks
          Dan

That sparks a memory: I once had a terrible metallic racket that came and went when a screw from the rear main seal housing worked its way loose. It rattled around the tranny bell housing. I thought something horrible had happened, had the car towed to a mechanic (many years ago) and they couldn't find anything or even reproduce the noise. When I drove off, it came back, so back the car went. This time the guy pulled the inspection screen on the bell housing, and out fell the chewed up screw.

I don't know why it would occur only under acceleration, but its a thought.

        Hi Dan,

Maybe something with your belts. Try to spray some water on the belts while it's running and making the noise.

I can't imagine the noise from the description, Dan. All I can suggest is that it may be related to weak torque rod bushings or engine/tranny mounts, causing something to contact under the torque of acceleration that straightens out when those forces disappear.

Good luck. It looks like an uncommon issue, so let us know when you've got it figured out.

Crawled under the car last night and all the mounts looked good. Torque rod bushings are good poly-U.
          Thanks

Detonation? Fill up with premium and see if there is a difference. Long shot I know, but easy to check.

I will try this but it really does not sound like detonation. I asked if she had just put gas in the car but it had been driven for days since the last fill up before the noise started.
            Thanks
            Dan
