940 cannot clear obd codes, rex regina, stumped 900 1994


all,
need some help on this silly rex regina system.

i have a 94 940 rex regina. i have 3 codes but i cannot clear them from socket 2. the engine light has gone off, but the codes remain.
i can't remember the 3 codes but they are for
1. low/ high battery voltage
2. iac (runs fine, but code triggered)
3. air temp sensor (car dies when disconnected)

i set the ignition key and disconnected the battery and i tried deleting them throught the obd box. it has always worked before, but now they are not removed.

the car runs fine, and i'm sure i don't need to replace anything. no other codes in socket 6.

i haven't had time to drive the car to see if the engine light will come back on, but i think it will.

i've read previous posts, but i'm still baffled. bad icu? i had something similar in 2009. at that time car failed inspection, nox. i replaced the cat and o2 sensor and passed since.

side note, i have no idea why volvo went to this system other than to make more money off of their loyal clientele.

    Hi Guy,
    Your post triggered a hit as I just checked the fault codes on my '93 with a Rex-Regina (which I like) and noticed an entry in my Haynes manual of a problem similar to yours and a socket # 2 (fuel and exhaust) code 2-2-3:
    "idle air control valve signal absent or faulty"

    My notes states this is a false-positive reading due to a bad fuel pump relay.

      hello james,
      yes, i came across this fuel relay info from bruce (lucid) and others. i don't have this -3608 white relay, though. the 94-95s have the cube relay in the middle front.

      i use a 30A relay, bosch -101. dave barton's volvo page shows compatible relays which i'm using.

      i cleared the codes by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 15 min, as spook suggested. i put in my older relay, and the car was running very poorly. i put in another relay, and the car runs fine.

      so it appears these fuel relays, either the white one (-3608) or the cube one (-101 or compatible) suffer similar problems.

      i'll order a new cube fuel relay and keep the current one as a spare.

      if anything changes, i'll write back.

    Dear bcg,

    Hope you're well. With the key out of the ignition, disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery post. Leave it disconnected for 15 minutes. See if this clears the codes.

    I do not understand what is meant by "set the ignition key". Disconnecting the negative battery cable clamp from the battery post should clear all codes and re-set all on-board computers.

    Please report your findings.

      hello j.e.,
      all i meant was that the key was in position II.

      I did disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes, and all the codes were cleared.

      i'm still learning about the rex regina idiosyncrocies and issues.

      the car is running fine.

        The code-clearing technique also works on cars with Bosch ignition/fuel management.
