Blower Motor Information 200

I recently replaced the blower motor in my 1990 245. Here is some information that may be of help if you are looking at replacement. I strongly suggest visiting Art's website www.cleanflametrap.com for a pictorial how to.

*686540 impeller clips Dealer $4.89 Tasca $3.28 *
1370240 resistor Dealer $52.18 Tasca $36.90**

Blower Motor:

From Advance Auto one can obtain a, made in Canada, Four Seasons blower motor. It's sold under the brand name Factory Air Brand name Part No. 35566 for $37.99, at this writing. It might take 2-3 days to get this motor, it must come from further up the distribution chain than a regional warehouse.

The VDO blower motor from FCP is manufactured in China.

*Just in case one of the clips gets away from you.

** If replacing the motor resistor, avoid the MTC brand resistor from any vendor, the two I got had identical failures making them unusable.

Thanks. I will mark this thread.

This is something I have been putting off for well over a year on my '92 245.
    I dread it.

A few questions for you, if that's ok.
    Was it your first one?
How long did it take you?
    Any real surprises?

      Hi Andrew,

Yep it was my first blower motor change out.

Due to an on going parts situation it took over a week to get things there and installed.

      See this post:

      http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1564115/220/240/260/280/blower_motor_resistor.html

Having one recently under my belt, I think now I could do it in a day or day and a half. Knowing what I know now I would get extra impeller clips and the resistor from the dealer, and the dealer only. Avoid the MTC resistor. The motor from Advance is the same brand as Art used in his 1990.

I printed out Art's tutorial and broke it up in sections stapled together, labeled 1-2-3, etc. I went step by step using his guide. I replaced the dash cap, which comes off first, at the same time with a rather nice one from a 1992 so that was lucky.

Cover everything below your work area, dropped things seem to go into a black hole, especially those impeller clips, you don't drop them, they launch.

I used blue painters tape to label vacuum hoses and anything else, and cable ties to bundle/manage cables. I separated fasteners that came from different sections, that helped on "reconstruction". Art's work on the heater console and placement of lamps and switches is stellar.

Pay very close attention to hose and cable routing, photographs were/are of immeasurable value here.

The only real surprise was the deformed center vent that was replaced with a PNP acquisition, and me losing things to the "Black Hole".

So when is the big change out day?
