Help finding rear sunroof drain tubes? (RE: Sunroof Leaking) 700

1989 744

I have my sunroof off looking for the reason water came into cabin in a recent rain.

Front drains are open, but rear ones may be clogged, so I am trying to locate where they exit the car.

The FAQs and such say they come down the "C" Pillars and exit aft of the rear tires, but not sure if I've found them.

Water was coming in my manual crank handle, and I found the sealing on the rail-to-tub around the cable mechanism was deteriorated (See photo at Copy and Paste Link: http://screencast.com/t/ZfRq9WT2A ). That allowed water to get into the crank-and-cable area.

Arrows point to green-painted steel lines coming down of L. C-Pillar, but one (green arrow) connects to gas filler pipe. Red arrow points to tube that disappears under trunk area. BOTH of these seem like fuel vents?

The fat black hose on left (green arrow) drains area behind rear window. The hose on right (that join in a plastic "Y" and exists behind RR Wheel) disappears up in the "C-Pillar" so I am guessing it may drain the rear sunroof area?

This one (See Red Arrow w/ "??" in photo http://screencast.com/t/7iERKnIcZ ) may connect to rear sunroof drains? If so, do the rear drains connect together somewhere out of sight and combine to flow down the right side C-Pillar?

I disconnected the "red-arrow" hose at the plastic fitting and had a helper BLOW into the bottom end of the hose. It was wide open (no resistance to air-flow) and placing my ear at each rear corner of the sunroof opening (lid removed) I could clearly hear the rush of air coming between the headliner and the metal top of the car. Hopefully that's a good test if that fat hose DOES connect to the sunroof drain hoses?

Any suggestions appreciated.

BTW- Anyone know what the black plastic box with wires on both ends is that I labeled w/ a red box with a "?" in the Left Upper Quarter Panel?

As you look at the rear tire from the side of the car, it exits in front of the wheel between the plastic wheel well and the body.

      Yes, thanks.

The only reasonable hose and fitting after tearing both sides of the trunk carpet up appeared to be that one. I thought I'd read that the two sides join in a "Y", but didn't know it was up and out of sight as that "Y" must be (vs the "Y" at the fitting that joins the sunroof drain and the rear window drain tub shown in the photo).

Easy to find, park on a slight incline - up hill - and pour a cup of water on the left side of the SR opening and then on the right side of the opening. You should see a cup of water on the ground both times.

My 780 was clogged in the rear. After parking in the sun for a few days and with the SR out, I took a leaf blower and blew out a bushel of leaves! A lot of them anyway.

Check the front drains the same way except park the car flat or down hill.

        EDIT:

My V70 leaked into the SR mechanism and then dripped down on my wife, only in heavy rains. Turns out the windshield leaked at the top and allowed water to get in. The V70 SR crank is to far forward to get SR water into it.

          Thanks-

I ran some #12 insulated wire 10ft into both front drains (must have coliled somewhere, cuz there's not 10ft of tubing!), and then used a small funnel and some 1/8" tubing to pour water through the front ones and both rocker panels leaked the water out so I think they're OK, plus I'd run wire through them only a while back.

I poured water through the left rear drain (car was positioned slightly nose up and leaning to the left, which was exactly where the car was parked when it leaked, and it freely poured out the drain by the right rear tire).

I haven't parked it leaning right nose high yet to try the Rt rear drain tube.

I was fighting getting the sunroof back together (sliding headliner first got stuck on a bent track guide, then one hinge of the vent panel came loose with everything back together-Uugh! Took a while to get it back together and properly adjusted again.

When I had the roof panel out I cleaned and brushed the seal to get the fuzz rejuvenated (so it hopefully fits tighter and more water resistant), and filled the 1/8" gap where the two ends come together to preclude gross-leaks.

Heck, given that the water was puddling on the imperfectly flush roof panel, and may have been running in through the gap, maybe it overwhelmed the drain capacity the other day in the thunderstorm even.

But the seal is better, the tracks are lubed (w/ some sparing silicone grease), and the roof now operates like it's on ball bearings, so hopefully it won't fill up w/ water again.

After all the hours and multiple times disassembling and re-assembling the sunroof, I feel like an expert, so next time it will go very quickly!

          Thanks-
