Thule roof rack system 200 1988

I have a 1992 745 that's headed for the junkyard. (Engine fire melted everything under the hood) It has a pretty nice roof rails/rack system, I think made for Volvo by Thule. I've just bought a 1988 245. Is anybody familiar enough with them to tell me how much luck I'd have installing that roof system on the 245? I've removed one of the rails and it looks like there's actually a channel in the roof structure that's designed to support the load. I'm guessing I'll have no such structure in the 245 roof. And it had some blind nut/spacers where it was attached, and I don't think I can get the old ones out. So I'd have to source new ones.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

as a kayaker...always loved those rain gutters...these and a couple of 2x3s or 2x4s do the trick

maybe, if the Thules tubes are round this may help...but aren't Thules some other shape?

The Thule roof rack on the 700 sold by Volvo is a standard Thule roof rack just marketed by Volvo with their markup of course. Most likely, the foot is a Thule 100300 and the load bars are the LB58. IMHO, the 58s are too long, knock you in the head long. Some folks have cut them a little shorter, I opted for the shorter LB50 load bars on the 940 and they work fine and fit the 240.

Confirmed: 100300 foot pack is correct for the 88 245 and the load bars is the LB50. You can use the knock you in the head high liability LB58 or cut them down. I think 52" would be optimal for the 200/700 and 900.

I have a thule rack for my 245. The racks clamp onto the rain gutter. Its held a good 8 plus sheets of sheetrock on many occasions. One day hoping to make a deck with a 4 wheeler trailer ramp so I can pull some Ansel Adam shots off the top.

The gutter mount is probably what I'd rather have. But what I do have are the euro rails off a 745. So I'm trying to decide if I should try to make do and adapt them to the 245, or just go buy what I need...

Gutter mounts are probably the best bet and can be taken off when not needed so they don't drop your mpg. Good if you also intend to use a top box. Fitting the 745 rails a lot of work with potential strength and leak issues. Cross bars would probably be too long as well. Remove carefully and sell to another 700 owner to off set the cost a new Thule system?
