Speedo cluster Removal – Advice Needed 444-544

I have access to speedometer cluster I’d like to restore, but I have to remove it from a vehicle. I have never worked under a PV Dash.

Recommendations for the easiest method to remove the cluster would be greatly appreciated.

I have looked under the dash and the back of the cluster by removing the driver’s seat, placing a board over the floor hump and lying on it with my head under and inside the dash. I have seen pictures of the cluster and it looks like that it’s held in place by 2 nuts and the speedo cable.

Does the cluster come out from the front of the dash, or does it have to be removed from behind? If behind, it looks like the wiper motor is in the way. If that has to come out, any tricks to removing it?

Would it be easier to unbolt the steering column and remove the Phillips screws on both ends under the dash, attempting to remove the whole dash first? What other fasteners need to be removed to loosen the dash?

If some has some additional pictures showing more detail, it would also help.

Perhaps this is obvious, but be sure to disconnect the battery.

It has been nearly twenty years since I have done this, but, as I remember, this operation requires patience. Everything needs to be turned and wiggled just exactly right for the speedo assembly to clear.

Thank you for the great advice.
Unfortunately I was a day late getting to the parts car and someone else had pulled the dash a day earlier. However, your pointers will be useful when I get to the point where I will be removing my own cluster.

What do you need? I have some PV444 dash parts.....................have molded a few new parts for my dash............. email me if you are interested

I concur with the idea of disconnecting the battery. If your wiring is old can easily short a wire.

Not sure if this link is going to work, but if you remove the odometer from the gage cluster, be sure to set the little gear in the correct position before reinstalling. I forgot and never had the time to pull my dash back apart.

Belinda, what 444 dash parts do you have exactly?

I assume you're talking about the 544 ribbon type not the 444 round. You will need to remove the ignition switch (see copious instruction in "search") and the fan switch as well. Disconnect the speedo cable and the temp sensor cable (two tiny screws) take it out carefully. Unplug all the bulbs. Disconnect or remove the gas gauge. Undo the knurled knuts at each end of the unit and pull it back (towards the front of the car) and slide it towards the center of the car as well. Tip it forwards and slip the end opposite the speedo cable out the opening. Take a breath. Come out from under and retrieve the speedo out the front of the dash. Celebrate with a cold beverage. Installation is, of course, the reverse.
To me, the hardest part is getting the ignition key cylinder out.
Good luck

Take out the 2 screws on the bottom edge of the dash that hold the ign. switch, and unbolt the coil. Push the switch/coil assy. into the dash to clear the speedo housing. With the driver seat and rails out, put some padding over the rails and lie on your back with your head under the dash. Use a headband LED and a thin magnetic tipped screwdriver to take out the tiny temp.gauge screws.

Speedo cluster Removal – Advice Needed 444-544

Hello,

In case jk63pv544 does not know, the front seats can be removed by sliding the seat forward off of the seat tracks. No tools are required.

Be very careful when moving the water temperature gauge as the capillary tube can be broken easily. To remove the temperature gauge from the dash after you removed the screws, you have to move the gauge to a corner and then tilt one end out and the rest will follow.

When you are disconnecting the wires at the back of the fuel gauge you might encounter the little clear plastic caps that cover the ends of the special nuts on the back of the fuel gauge. You may have to remove the plastic caps before you can get a socket on the nuts.
