Update - Head Gasket / Oil Leak 200 1992

I drove the Volvo to work today. Here's what has transpired over the last month.

1. Removed the head.
2. Ordered the Volvo head gasket kit.
3. Head gasket arrived bent and damaged in the mail.
4. Sent damaged head gasket back for another one.
5. Took the head to a machine shop.
5. Machine shop said the head was not warped. Cam journals were not warped. Pressure tested the head and it checked out fine. Inspected the valves. Installed new valve seals. No problems noted on the head, so they very lightly planed the bottom to help ensure a good seal.
6. Pulled a "T" cam from a 940 and installed it in the head.
7. Got everything back together, but messed up installing the new front crankshaft seal. Leaked oil from the crankshaft.
8. Pulled the timing belt off again and removed the crank seal.
9. Waited for new crank seal to arrive in the mail.
10. Installed 2nd crank seal and put everything back together.
11. Test drove the car. Drives fine. Started right up.
12. Need to tighten alternator belts.
13. So far like the "T" cam with my automatic transmission. Seems to accellerate better from red lights.

Will drive for a while with the belly pan removed to look for any coolant or oil leaks.

Go Dolphins!

    Update - Head Gasket / Oil Leak 200 1992

    Hi Tom,

Good luck with your head gasket replacement. Sounds like you did a splendid job.

Inasmuch as I'm contemplating a HG job I've got two questions:

What prompted you to replace the valve stem seals. Is it that on a 20+ year old car, even if they don't leak and you don't burn oil, it's a "good" thing to do "while you're in there". Did you do the work or did you let the shop replace them?

    Did you install new hushers?

      What's happening Marty?

It was one of those things where the valve stem seals come with the head gasket kit. So while the head was at the shop, I had them install the seals and check the valves over. I believe the seals are only on the intake valves.

The hushers also come with the head gasket kit and I installed them myself since I had the camshaft and shim discs already removed. The hushers just pop on the end of the valve stems. A 4 year old kid could probably pop them on with little trouble. As simple as legos. Pop them on and then put the cups and discs back in place over each valve.

Good luck. This is the second head gasket job I've done and it went well overall. I had much less anxiety this time and everything came apart and went back together fairly easily. It was almost a fun job. I must be getting crazy because I'm tempted to look for a 240, 740, or 940 on Craigslist with a blown head gasket that I could buy cheap and fix!
