Widen a brake caliper 120-130

Here is a strange one. Got the new brake calipers but they dont fit over the vented rotor. I was surprised that they dont but when I looked closer at the old brake calipers, somone added spacers to the middle of the caliper to widen them to fit over the vented rotor. I know that 122s only have a single rotor but someone modified these calipers. Ive never seen this or heard of this being done.

triumph suppliers sell caliper spacers for the girling 16 3 piston to facilitate vented rotors

I've seen it done on 140s when vented disks from a 164 are fitted. I have it on at least one 144 of mine. The reason on for doing it on a 140 is because the original caliper (i.e. from the non vented disk) has a significantly bigger pad area than that on the vented 164. Why on earth Volvo would use a smaller pad on the heavier 164 is a little beyond me.

I have some 164 vented calipers and they look the same to me as far as pad size goes.
Could you have REAR pads for vented rotors? Remember the 122 has (mostly) single circuit brakes.

Hi George,
You've made me rethink but I'm pretty sure they were smaller on mine. It's hard to believe Australian delivered cars were different to yours. I'm away from the cars today, but will leave myself a note to have a look tomorrow and try and get some measurements and part numbers and let you know.

Widen a brake caliper 120-130

Hi George,

I've just come back from measuring the calipers and pads. I've seen the post below but haven't gone back to check the brand of caliper. It's dark here now and winter. Do you know if Volvo used both ATE and Girling calipers on the vented 164s?

I couldn't read any part numbers on the old pads I had but here are the measurements:

144: Pad 3.73" x 1.96" (to the widest point). Distance between piston centres is 1.99"

164: Pad 3.14" x 1.88" (to the widest point). Distance between piston centres is 1.84". The 164 caliper is visibly smaller, although I didn't measure it. Piston diameters looked very similar, but difficult to measure accurately on assembled calipers.

Regards

The ATE front calipers on the 164 use a different pad than the the Girling calipered 140's--and it is smaller. -- Dave
