Oil psi 60lbs but no oil on top on a 75 164 140-160 1975

I am still working this issue. The oil pressure is 60lbs and I understand is plenty. There is still no oil getting to the top end. There is probably blockage between the oil sending unit and the rocker arms. If it has always had good oil pressure could I still have a spun cam bearing? Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

That is a possibility. One thing you should check if you haven't done so is to remove the
entire rocker shaft and crank the engine for a while. You should see a pool of oil around
one of the rocker stand bolt holes. It is the one with the chamfer and one or two holes
angled into the head. If no pool of oil appears there the chances are good that you
have spun a cam bushing, although it is hard to figure out how you would do that.

All, thank you for your replies and assistance. This motor is beyond repair or has too many unknowns. I am in the market for a running used motor.

R. Kent Thompson in Howard, SD may have one. He's in the phone book.
or you can e-mail him at

He will probably offer you a deal too good to refuse.

Its unlikely a steel backed cam bearing will spin, the babbit metal will fatigue and break up blocking oil passage. Remove rocker and insert wire into oil feed hole and test depth, a previous owner may have installed head gasket about face with oil feed hole in wrong position. If wire goes beyond head thickness then you would be looking at cam brg blockage.

Previously I had posted a note on your original thread--and incorrectly assumed the oil path went from somewhere around the oil filter and up through the block to the to the cylinder head. Eric "Planetman" posted the correct path--up through the block from a camshaft journal--and suggested you may have spun a cam bearing blocking the oil path. It would seem from your efforts that's probably the case. As changing the cam/bearings is a major undertaking I had a thought--wacky as it might be---run a copper external oil line from a "T" at the oil pressure switch to the valve cover (make a pipe within the valve cover with tiny holes to spray oil on the rockershaft/pusdhrods). That could buy you time to figure out your next move. Many motors made in the early days ran external oil feeds -- the first Chevy V8 (1917) had exposed rocker arms. -- Dave

You could remove the rocker arm assembly and the spark plugs. Crank the engine on the starter and see if oil comes out of the hole near the rocker attachment bolt hole (I forget which one it is, near the back of the head I think). If oil comes out, then strip the rocker shaft and check. If not, you may have a blockage in the head gasket section that crosses between the block oil hole and the head.

That is the problem. The oil hole is clear but no oil comes out.

It sure sounds like you have a spun cam bearing.
