Crank Pully Holding tool

Recently someone posted that the crank pully holding tool by FPC Groton wasn't any good. Of course I read that the day after I ordered one... Having smoothly completed replacing a head gasket on a 92 940 with that tool with not so much as a skinned knuckle ... I am posting to tell you that it's a great tool! It even worked for holding the cam shaft sproket. So you can save yourself a lot of money because they are on sale because FPC is moving so they want to move as little as possible.

Ride well

Dave

IPD did sell a tool users found would bend, and this person took part in the discussion if you search the threads. Later an IPD phone person stated that the supplier problem was fixed. Plans for the tool exist if you can fabricate. Personally, I am currently making a second set of two tools, one for me and one for kid's Volvo, that allow using the torque wrench and the tool in a two hand squeeze as the hole for hooking onto the tensioner bolt has not been that useful for me. And, yes, a proper tool works with the camshaft sprocket; also as well for a crankshaft rotating tool.

Dave, I second your endorsement. I had been using the rope trick for years. But when I had to replace a head gasket on one of my 940's in January, I went ahead and bought the tool from FCP along with the gasket, etc. I LOVE this tool! It is built well and worked perfectly. I wish I would have got this thing a long time ago!

Crank Pully Holding tool

Hi Dave and Phil,

Happy Good Friday to you.

This is good news. I'd read here on the board of bricks the Crank Shaft Counterhold tool (Volvo PN 9995284) from iPd was made of flimsy plate metal.

You can use the FCP crank counter hold tool to hold either the cam shaft sprockets? That's very cool. The Volvo camshaft counter hold tool is Volvo PN 9995034).

Could this counter hold tool be used on the B21/B23 and so forth before the low friction engine advent what with the harmonic balancer crank pulley we have on our B230s?

The B21/B23 has the all metal crank pulley (not a harmonic balancer). So, for those people that have those engines with the all metal crank, I think you can use the Volvo PN 9995034, the same tool used to counter hold the cam pulleys on any four cylinder redblock (and perhaps others?)? I'm not sure.

I'm going to take my Volvo PN 9995034 and see if this is true in my next boneyard visit (by a bonehead, that 's me). I'll report back with findings.

Thank you.

Have a good weekend.

cheers,
